Philly travel help, anyone?

We're talking about a spending weekend in Philly in April (assuming we can get Pearl Jam tickets for that weekend).  Because there are so many options and I always want the best choice, I can't just pick a hotel.  Any recommendations?  We want somewhere nice, and convenient for being tourists, but not crazy expensive.  Also, certain areas that are better to stay than others?  I'd like to be able to mostly walk wherever we want to go, if possible.

I'm still just reviewing options, because the PJ tickets don't go on sale til next Friday, and I want to make sure I have tickets before I book travel.
Thanks!

Also, @SnShne322 - Pearl Jam released their tour schedule yesterday, did you see that?  They're playing Fenway in August.

Re: Philly travel help, anyone?

  • I'm going to follow this thread. DH and I just talked about a long weekend in April, either Philly or Niagara Falls. I think Philly will win since it's at least 2 hours closer. We've never been to either so recommendations will help.

I hadn't heard Pearl Jam was playing, I want to go I haven't seen them live. DH isn't a fan though. I'm excited for Weezer too, but DH isn't a fan of that either so I need a concert buddy.
  • Last night was concert planning night in our house.  Ever since the rumored PJ tour schedule came out a month or so ago, we've been talking about planning a 3-4 day vacation around a show.  When we saw the schedule last night, I started looking at all the stops and we settled on either the NOLA jazz fest (but I'm concerned about how their ticket sales work and whether we'll actually get in to see PJ that night), Philly, or Fenway (but the acoustics there are really not that good).  So Philly it is.  I think we're also going to try and get Fenway tickets from our season ticket holder friend, but that would be a bonus.

Then we started looking at the G Love tour schedule for the spring and wondering if we should travel for that instead.  But we've already seen him so many times, we wound up just getting tickets for G Love in Boston in March, and now I need to book a hotel for that.
  • I haven't been to PHL in over 10 years but back then I visited a lot of hotels and they were all very nice.

Most of the tourist activities will be in center city with the historic elements specifically in old city.  I usually stayed west of old city (more of the business district) and really nice places were the Sofitel and Westin.  The closest to old city that I ever stayed was the Hampton Inn and the Marriott Courtyard.  Both were great. The Courtyard was a lot more upscale and fancy looking in architecture than your typical Courtyard.  The Hampton was a little more budget but I appreciated that it offered free breakfast.  It looks like there is a Holiday Inn express close by the river, which would be very convenient.  If you are really looking for a budget option there are probably a lot of places on Air BnB since a lot of people live in the city in both apartments and houses.  I also stayed at Embassy Suites and there are some nice perks with staying there but for your purposes I think it is a little further out than you would like to be.

The Ritz Carlton is $$$$ but is my favorite hotel there.  It is gorgeous.  Worth going to the lobby for a happy hour drink even if you are not staying there.

Center city is very easy to get around.  Very walkable and there is a limited subway.  The subway might be good for going to the concert if the concert is where I think it is.  A good way to see the tourist attractions and have built in transportation is one of the hop on and off buses.

This is a great "tourist" place to eat http://www.citytavern.com/ and of course there are a lot of really good restaurants in PHL.  In my day I liked this place http://www.tequilasphilly.com/

  • You might want to XP on MM.  That is where I usually hang out and a lot of people there have good travel advice.

@SusieBW You might want to post on our FB board.  I know at least Therese is near Philly.

Good idea.  PJ tickets go on sale tomorrow, so if I get tickets, I will post there, too.  Thanks!
