Dark Witch Discussion

I'm not sure how the group read discussions work. Anyone want to discuss Dark Witch?

Re: Dark Witch Discussion

  • I'll discuss!

I didn't like it. It wasn't engaging.  Characters were lukewarm at best and the romance was too sweet. Like saccharin sweet.  I mean, I don't need graphic sex scenes, they were so lacking.  I didn't find Iona very likeable either.

And the fight scene?  All book we lead up to this and it takes like two pages and I left it wondering what the heck happened!

I think I originally gave it two stars, but downgraded it to one.

  • I'm only about 30% through it, but I'm really not into it either.  PNR is generally not my thing, but when it's done well, I do sometimes enjoy it.  I don't care for the writing style here - I find that sometimes I have to go back and re-read a sentence to figure out what she's trying to say, and I don't feel any connection with the characters.  They all feel like caricatures a little bit - like they're so very stereotypical of the role they are supposed to play, just so no one is confused about how things are going to go.  But again, I'm only 30% through.  I'm still reading though, so there's that.
  • Oh I'm so glad you all feel this way! While I finished the book in just over 2 weeks, I just couldn't get motivated to pick the book up and read for an hour. I had trouble with some of the wording too.

I agree the final scene was such a let down, what 3 pages of fighting after 320 of build up? I didn't think it was that well told either, I got confused as to who was around and had to go back to find out what happened to the bad guy. What a let down he just turned to fog and left.

I haven't read any PNR, but I didn't feel there was a lot of paranormal after it went to the present time. It was mainly I can make fire, let's go drink beer and whiskey and ride horses. And what the heck, most trilogies have an awesome cliffhanger ending, something to leave you going "what's going to happen next, let me jump right in" this one leaves you with an unrealistic romance. Ugh I was disappointed, not sure if I can't to continue on with the series.

I almost wish this wasn't a trilogy, more just one book. I hate to say it, but I feel like Nora Roberts is such a house hold name now she stretched this first one out way too far just to sell 3 books instead of 1.

Has anyone read the series, does it get any better?
  • It's interesting in its PNR categorization.  It felt a lot more like Fantasy to me, but I know it was a Romance.  I suppose witches and demons are paranormal in nature, but it felt more like A Discovery of Witches than Black Dagger Brotherhood, but I know there's more to the genre than that.

I've read a few Nora Roberts, but not a ton. I know she's not lacking, but this one was really weird for me.

  • So, is this generally not representative of Nora Roberts' work?  Like, are most of her other series or stand alones better than this?
  • I've read a few standalones and the Signs of Seven trilogy and the Bridal Quartet.  They weren't masterpieces, but I thought they were much, much better than this one.

  • That fight scene reminded me of Twilight. All the build up, and then nothing. I didn't love any of the characters. Especially Iona. I could not have cared less about what happened to her. The dialogue bothered me as well. I'm not a fan of writing in an "accent", like Susie said, it felt like caricatures. I just wasn't feeling this one.

  • I've read a lot of her work and this wasn't my favorite.  I felt like everything came way too easily to Iona and it bothered me.  But the series did get better in the end.  Overall, it isn't something I'll go back to often like I do with her other work.

    My favorite Cake Wreck ever.

  • I started, and didn't hate it, but didn't feel compelled to read on once I got started. I absolutely adore her In Death series as JD Robb, but this wasn't doing it for me.
