Question about where to get children's books

My sister-in-law is having a baby in a few months and I want to start getting the baby a collection of books.  Now that I'm shopping around I'm realizing how expensive children's books are.  Barnes and Noble is charging almost $20 or more for one book.  Target and Amazon aren't much better.  Is there a store or website that has cheaper children's books?  Or should I wait for a sale or coupon?

I live in central MA and I know a few of you are from around that area so maybe you know of a discount book store.  I don't really want to get used books but I also don't want to pay top dollar either.

Thanks for any help!

  • Amazon is the cheapest.

  • I go with Amazon as well.

  • I've actually found some gems at Homegoods.

    It's slippery as waterweed.
  • Amazon seems to be the cheapest. Sometimes I find good board books at Marshall's or Ross or stores like that. Kohl's has a limited selection, but you might be able to use their 30% off coupons or grab the classics when they're on the Kohl's Cares for Kids promotion for $5.

  • I've seen a surprising number of great kids' books in good condition at thrift stores.  You have to sort through some crap, and I highly recommend cleaning them well, but we stocked my mom's house with grandkid books from local thrift stores.

  • Costco is a good place to look, too.

  • I usually have really good luck at TJ Maxx/Marshalls/Homegoods.

Amazon too, you can usually find some really good ones on sale.
  • Amazon or BJ's has the best prices I've found.

  • The best prices are with Scholastic Reading Club through the school/teachers.  If you have any connection at all, a teacher friend or a preschool worker, then buying through those little paper book orders (or placing the order online) offers the BEST prices. We buy many many books this way.

  • I went to a used book store over the weekend and was able to find some really pretty vintage books.  The artwork is really beautiful so I'm excited for those.  I've also ordered a few newer ones on B&N and Amazon.
  • Amazon is usually the cheapest for new.

We go to the local thrift stores monthly and dig a bit, but we always find a few books in really good (sometimes near-new) condition and it's so much cheaper than new or used book store prices.

I've found some good children's book on Craigslist. A lot of families buy books that just don't get read.

I'm also an Usborne Books and More consultant. UBAM offers great rewards for hosting a party, so that's another great way to get inexpensive/free books. I know not a lot of people have heard of UBAM, so I thought I'd share. :)
