Grad school graduation gift

We have a friend graduating from grad school this week. His wife is throwing him a surprise graduation party on Friday. What is an appropriate gift to bring with? I think this is our first friend to get their masters degree, so I need some ideas. Thanks!!

Re: Grad school graduation gift

  • where are they in their life? house, kids? do they have a job lined up post graduation?

whenever I'm stumped for a gift I generally go with a nice bottle of wine. If they have a job lined up you could get something nice for their office? a gift certificate to a frame shop so they can have their diploma framed? a gift certificate to a nice restaurant so they can enjoy a nice meal out now that free time isn't consumed with homework?

  • I wouldn't think this is a big gift giving occasion, so I'd also go with a bottle of wine and a card.

  • Yeah, I think when I graduated from law school I got a gift from my H, my parents, my parents' best friends (who are closer to me than my grandparents), and my inlaws.  No gifts from anybody else.  It shouldn't be a huge gift-giving occasion.  It would be his third graduation, at least.

I would bring some wine or liquor and call it done.

  • Liquor makes it easy! He's married with one kid, and they have a house already, so basically set in that way. Thanks

yup, when in doubt, alcohol is appropriate most the time, even just as a hostess gift. I'd agree with others that this isn't a big gift giving occasion. I don't think I got any gifts for my graduation from my masters program, my parents might have taken us out to dinner.

  • Just put me on the booze bandwagon. ;) I feel like "things" are more for high school graduations and not for advanced degrees.
  • I agree with PP.  You could go with just a card, or do a hostess type gift.  Booze is always a good idea but for this type of occasion flowers might also be nice.  In my experience guys tend not to get flowers often so they may think it is kind of cool to get them for a change.
  • Slightly different topic, but whenever I've been part of those group Christmas gift games...like where one person opens a gift and then the next person can either take their gift or open another one...the booze gifts are always clamored over and "stolen" multiple times.
