Six of Crows (NS)

I requested Six of Crows on Overdrive a couple of months ago as I see it popping up on NBC a lot. Long story short, the book finally came up when I was in the middle of another book and I lost at least 3 days on the rental. I tried to start SOC last night, however it wasn't what I thought it was going to be. I think I went in with expectations of a murder mystery along the lines of Agatha Christie. Without spoiling anything, can anyone who's read the book give me a general feel of the genre and plot? Is this more of a Game of Thrones or Dark Witch, sort of fantasy genre? I have to return the OD book because I won't have time to read the 470 pages in the remaining time, I'm trying to figure out if it's worth requesting again or even purchasing as I think my husband might enjoy it.

Re: Six of Crows (NS)

  • I LOVED this book and fantasy isn't my thing. I haven't read Game of Thrones or Dark Witch so I'm not much help there. It's definitely fantasy but not too much fantasy and not a murder mystery and IMO, a quick read. It's not deep but definitely entertaining.

  • I've started this one and then a library book came in, so I put it down. I only read a chapter or 2, I believe. I'll probably pick it back up soon though. Did you already read the Grisha series?

  • No I haven't read the Grisha Series, in fact I haven't even heard of it. I saw SOC's on here so much, and it's so prominently placed in B&N that I assumed it was the hot book right now. Should you read the Grisha Series before starting SOC?
  • I'm not sure if you have to. I was just curious. It does take place in the same world as the Grisha series, which I loved.

  • You don't need to read the Grisha series in order to enjoy Six of Crows.

I also loved this book. One of my favorites for this year. The plot is not murder mystery. It's definitely a big time complicated heist plot, along the lines of the Oceans 11/12/13 movies. Lots of strings, lots of puppets, lots of red herrings. It's excellent!
