NMMR: Things to do in Charleston?

Hi guys! Everyone here is always so helpful so I thought I would ask - has anyone ever been to Charleston, SC, or is anyone from the area? My husband and I are vacationing there in April, spending part of the time on Kiawah Island and part in downtown Charleston at an adorable inn. What are your favorite area attractions? Great spots to grab a bite to eat or a drink? What shouldn't we miss?

Thanks in advance!

Re: NMMR: Things to do in Charleston?

  • Are you guys into golf?  Golfing Kiawah is great.

I haven't been to Charleston in a long time, but downtown has great shopping, AMAZING seafood.  You will love it.

Also, you are pretty close to Hilton Head and Savannah.

  • There is a plantation (the name escapes me right now) where they filmed part of Gone With the Wind.  That was interesting.

If you like pecans, there is an AMAZING shop called Market Street Sweets where they make my favorite pralines (they melt in your mouth) along with bear claws, candied pecans, glazed pecans and a bunch of other yummy things.  The usually have free samples of things by the front door.

Market Street is the old Slave market and they have some shops and craft booths from what I can remember.

  • Just eat everything. I freaking love long weekends in Charleston!

One of my favorite restaurants is The Ordinary. It's a raw seafood type bar (although they also have a DELICIOUS selection of cooked seafood) and they are AMAZING!

    Other must eats -
Magnolias - Traditional Southern fare and it's amazing!
    Cru Cafe
    FIG
    Slightly North of Broad (SNOB)

Go to City Lights Coffee on Market Street for coffee and breakfast. They're a wonderful local place with great coffee and food! Convenient to walk to downtown.

All of your major shopping will be on King Street.

There are both public and private historic homes that you can tour. They all have something to offer depending on what you're looking for. The Historic Charleston Foundation manages both the Nathaniel Russell House and the Aiken-Rhett House Museum.

Apparently the aquarium in Charleston is really good but I haven't seen it yet myself.

Take a walk along the Battery.

Definitely book a boat tour out to Fort Sumter. It's worth the visit! I think we did one of the last tours of the day and it was much quieter than earlier tours which gave us more time to just explore on our own.

Across the bay and technically in Mt. Pleasant is Patriots Point where you can tour the USS Yorktown. Highly recommended by some friends but last time I was in Charleston they had limited hours due to the time of year we were there (late Feb., April will be fine).

Plan to walk everywhere downtown. There are buses and carriages and all sorts of other stuff but I found it easy enough to walk to all of the places I wanted to go to. Plus parking is $$$$ and really, if you stick to just downtown, there's plenty to see without getting in your car.

Mostly I just had fun going for morning runs past all the historic homes on the waterfront, taking walks, taking it all in.

Kiawah is GORGEOUS and you will love it! I went on a girl's trip there in 2014 and we spent a day on Kiawah. The beaches are very nice and quiet, the clubhouse we had lunch at was also really delicious but I don't remember the name. There's a fun little shopping center on the island too.
  • It's been over a decade since I've been there, so I don't have specific places to recommend.  But I love Charleston.  It's such a beautiful city and has amazing architecture.  The older properties (older as in 1800s) are European influenced.  Lots of wrought iron.  Being from NOLA, where we have a lot of that also, I always joke that Charleston is our more genteel and refined sister.
  • My family and I go all the the time. you will Love it! we live 2 hours away. All of the places that everyone is suggesting are wonderful. If you are into Shopping they have two malls. The Citadel ( not that great) and Northwoods Mall ( better). I live in South Carolina 10 minutes away from Hilton Head Sc ( MY husband works in  Hilton Head South Carolina) - if you happen to go that way vistit Sea Pines and Coligny Plaza, I work in Savannah Ga, if you happen to go that way visit River Street!
  • @hoffse - yes we are into golf and are planning to stay a night on Kiawah so we can play there!

Thanks to everyone for the recommendations!! We can't wait to visit and check out some of the spots and restaurants you've suggested.
