Monday Accountability

Don't think we've done this in awhile...

1. How MM was your weekend?

2. Any progress towards goals?

3. Do you celebrate St. Patrick's Day? If so, what will you do?

Re: Monday Accountability

  • 1. $50 Home Depot

    2. $100 vacation account , $385 to house project fund. I sat down and did the math and realized we have 8 months of living expenses in our savings account so we separated that out and have started a house project account. So excited! We paid off the washer and dryer so we only have $1320 left on the furniture.

    3. We don't really celebrate this holiday, but we do go to my parents and have corned beef and cabbage which I love!

  • 1. How MM was your weekend? Pretty good- groceries ($185), Old Navy ($20), lunch out with DH before Sabres game ($30), parking for game ($10), tickets (free from DH's parents).

    2. Any progress towards goals? $500 went to savings, DH is looking into changing his 403b contributions to 10% (currently it is a $ amount- hoping he can do % instead). Still waiting on the state tax return- hopefully this week.

    3. Do you celebrate St. Patrick's Day? If so, what will you do? DH and I don't. The girls usually have a party at school- that's enough excitement for us!

  • 1. How MM was your weekend?
    - Spendy. I hosted my SIL's bachelorette party, so I spent a lot of money on food and drinks for that. In addition to that, we spent $25 at the car wash and $6 to stream a movie from Amazon. 2. Any progress towards goals?
    - $100 to our Vegas fund and $100 to savings. 3. Do you celebrate St. Patrick's Day? If so, what will you do?
    - We don't do anything. If I remember, I wear green, but that's it.

    1. How MM was your weekend? Spendy but budgeted. $20-something on brunch Sat morning, $177 on the bridesmaid's dress for my brother's wedding, $20 church offering, $20 on Chinese for dinner Sunday.

*Edit- I conveniently forgot about the spending that wasn't budgeted, lol. We spent $50 at a local home & garden store on 3 indoor ceramic planters, an indoor plant for $9.99 (which had 2 ''trees' so now we have two plants for the house) and potting soil. The sales were great and we saved $20 on the total order. Not budgeted, but I've been wanting more indoor plants for awhile and they really fill in the empty space in the living room. And they make me happy :)

    2. Any progress towards goals? Yes, we finally transferred our money to our new bank accounts and closed our old bank accounts. At this new bank we opened a money market for the emergency fund, so it's nice to mentally see that money separated from the rest of our savings. Feels good to have it all done.

    3. Do you celebrate St. Patrick's Day? If so, what will you do? We go to my grandma's for corned beef and cabbage. Look forward to this meal every year!

  • 1) Ours was a little spendy, but it was expected.  My parents are coming next weekend to help us with built-ins, so we bought groceries to make a nice thank you dinner (steaks).  We also had to stock up for our own stuff, so we spent about $150 on groceries.  I also went clothes shopping for the first time all year.  My firm retreat's dress code is "resort casual" (whatever the hell that means), so I bought a new sundress and a couple of nice tops that I can wear.  I also got a couple pairs of shoes to replace some that are wearing out. My H bought a couple shirts as well. Grand total was $280, but it came out of our clothing sinking fund.  We also spent about $30 filling up both tanks with gas.

    2) We got our state tax refund on Friday, so we have topped off our vacation account for our trip to Italy in June.  My dad is working on a cut list for the built-ins, so we will have a better sense of what those are going to cost shortly.  I think I way overbudgeted for it.  I hope so!  We will see.  I also had a few hundred extra dollars come in from a legal survey I took and some stuff my mom sold on ebay for me.  She and I are going to go fabric shopping for pillows and curtains this weekend while my dad and H are constructing the built-ins, and I am planning on spending a little of my "found" money for fabric.

    3) I don't celebrate St. P's day.  I'm Irish Catholic (reddish hair and all), but I've never really been able to get into it.

  • 1. it was spendy. Saturday we had a gift certificate for lunch, but we spent $20 on beer and the tip. then we dropped $320 at the wholesale club (stocked up on papertowels, toilet paper, H needed razors, all of our easy to grab snack items (essential supplies for breastfeeding), and a case of beer definitely drove-up that bill.) $10 on saturday for a friend's debut performance by his new theater company. $4 sunday on a youth basketball game.

    2. I dropped all our tax documents off with our financial advisor, we're expecting a large return...so progress on goals will happen once taxes are filed.

    3. we probably won't do anything on St. Patty's day, but I'm planning to make corned beef and cabbage when my mom is here on the 18th and H and I are running in a St. Patty's day 5K to raise money for the local parks and rec fund on the 19th.

  • 1. How MM was your weekend?

Spent $8 at McD on Saturday.  That was it.  Not a grocery shopping week, so that helped.

    2. Any progress towards goals?

This was a great week for goals.  I got paid rent, paycheck for f/t job, and paycheck for p/t job.  Paid all my utility bills, paid off a few small cc balances, and paid down $1500 on my HELOC.

    3. Do you celebrate St. Patrick's Day? If so, what will you do?

There's a St. Patrick's Day parade in NOLA this Saturday, but I probably won't go.  Instead, I usually go to the Irish-Italian parade in a suburb city, but that is not until later this month.

Both of those parades are kind of funny in that, not only do the riders through beads like they do in the Mardi Gras parades, but they also throw a lot of grocery items.  They throw cabbages, carrots, potatoes, onions, garlic, small bags of chips, ramen noodles, moon pies, various pieces of fruit, cans of tomato paste, and boxes of spaghetti.  Though the cans of tomato paste and boxes of spaghetti are more rare to get.

Will do.  We're really just doing a pair of built-in bookcases, and we're going to put an upright piano in between them once I find one.  We are seeing H's grandma's piano in a couple weeks, and I've been scouring CL as well.

With any luck the built-ins will be constructed this weekend, and then it will just be paint/installation.

Don't think we've done this in awhile...

    1. How MM was your weekend?  Not so bad.  Didn't buy groceries this weekend since we will be out of town most of the week.  $40 gas, $15 dinner, $10 snacks.  I can't think of anything else.

    2. Any progress towards goals? Not really.  It was a non-pay week.  Plus we've had to use a lot of savings to pay for an unplanned trip to California for H's grandpa's funeral this week.  I'm bummed to see that money come out of savings, but I'm glad we put ourselves in a position to have money available to be able to go without worrying about how to pay for it.  Total for the trip is going to be about $1400--plane tickets, hotel room, rental car, meals, etc.

    3. Do you celebrate St. Patrick's Day? If so, what will you do?  Not really, although I've definitely got Irish in my blood!  My great-grandparents on my dad's side came here from Ireland.  When we were younger, my sister and mom and I would make a traditional Irish meal (NOT corned beef and cabbage)--boiled meat, champ (mashed potatoes), soda bread, the whole shebang.  That was fun!

There is usually an Irish band performing at our community theater the week before St. Patty's Day that H and I like to go to, which we actually bought tickets for this year, but we will be in California so I gave them to my sister.

I also usually volunteer for the Jaycees green fun run, but again, we will not be here for that since it's this weekend.

  • 1. Not too bad - $43 on groceries for the week and I'm guessing $50ish on treating my mom to lunch (not sure DH paid the bill and I didn't see it). I was really pleased with the grocery bill because I went to a new store and at my other shop the same haul would be at least $60.

    2. Regular savings transfer, but nothing extra. I finally set up an appointment for the fence company to come give us an estimate so I'm making progress on our housing project goals for the spring!

    3. We celebrate, but it's just a family dinner. I'm sometimes too lazy to make boiled dinner, so I might make colcannon instead. Do not fret - cabbage will be consumed!
  • 1. How MM was your weekend? Really not bad.
$1 for entrance fee into womens health fair, $6 for bath bombs at a booth, $5 for a large bag of gluten free samples, $15 for lunch with my mom, $7 tip for dinner at Red Robin.  We had a gift card for Red Robin, but they completely screwed up our meal so they comped our entire bill.
Then we went to Home Depot and Lowes to get ideas on remodeling our kitchen and how much it will cost.

    2. Any progress towards goals?
Had an $1,100 overage from last month.  So we tossed some money at various extras, including more into retirement.  It was nice to kick some butt with the budget.

    3. Do you celebrate St. Patrick's Day? If so, what will you do?
Don't necessarily celebrate it, but I usually try to have a reuben for lunch that day.  Yummy.

    1. How MM was your weekend?  Decent.  We stayed in Friday.  Saturday and Sunday we spent a little blow money shopping, splurged on pizza and fancy desserts for about $24, and then spent $12 on fun local tourist activities with our new foreign renter (staying with us for the month of March).

    2. Any progress towards goals?  Staying the course but allowing for a little more fun money this month.

H switched to Dollar Shave club and he estimates it will cut his razor costs in half.  New razor isn't quite as fancy as old razor but still fairly high end and good enough for his purposes.

    3. Do you celebrate St. Patrick's Day?  Our friends have a party on a weekend near the actual date.  Lots of yummy Irish themed food and green clothes.  Sometimes we wear fun green stuff and go out for drinks the day of and/or the weekend before.

    1. Fair. It was our anniversary weekend, so we did lunch out on both Saturday and Sunday, probably spending about $60 combined. Otherwise, $10 on dry cleaning. We're well stocked with groceries and H is out of town for business this week, so I skipped the store this weekend. 2. Not really, as it wasn't a pay week. I did throw an extra $40 at mortgage principal earned from Mrrebates.com and a few Field Agent gigs. 3. Only in college, but now as an adult, my English blood dictates I wear orange on St. Paddy's day. :)

    1. How MM was your weekend? Not great but mostly within budget. We had a big grocery shopping trip, purchased the floor tile for the master bathroom (on sale at $0.81/piece though), my splurge was on a windchime that I found while shopping for a birthday gift for a friend. Definitely didn't need to spend THAT money so I'll just have to take it out of our fun money for the month.

    2. Any progress towards goals? No MM related goals. I did make a lot of progress towards personal goals though. I've reorganized under all of the sinks in the house, I donated a bunch of clothing, shoes, and old purses. Next step is my home office and our linen closet but I'm feeling really great with my progress so far.

    3. Do you celebrate St. Patrick's Day? If so, what will you do? Not in any serious way even though my mom's family is mostly Irish Catholic. H and I usually make corned beef and Irish soda bread on St. Patrick's Day. I like to wear green, but it's my favorite color anyway and it brings out the green in my eyes.

    1. How MM was your weekend?  Not fantastic but it was mostly budgeted.  $85 at Costco, $80 at grocery store (a bit over budget), $25 on gas, $14 on a bottle of wine (not budgeted), $4.50 on a soda at the hockey game on Sat, $31 on lunch after the hockey game (not bad actually, we got there at 4 so took advantage of happy hour pricing).

I've also been working on selling things I don't need.  I haven't had any luck though, I've got stuff posted on Craigslist and a local Facebook buy/sell page.  I don't get how people say they can make decent extra cash selling things on Craigslist/Facebook.  I've been encountering nothing but flakes and/or people who just want stuff for free.  Had 2 people interested in a chair, then one guy stopped responding, the other girl had to cancel.  We are also selling a lawnmower for dirt cheap, and nobody can actually come through to pick it up.

    2. Any progress towards goals?  No savings transfer this paycheck, but it's not budgeted to do that anyway.

    3. Do you celebrate St. Patrick's Day? If so, what will you do? Not really.  I'm pretty Irish in terms of background, but it's normally just another day, unless it's a weekend and we decide to go out somewhere.  I'll wear green but that's about it.
  • 1. How MM was your weekend? Good! $130 for groceries. A little more than normal but kids are home this week (no daycare) so H is working from home a couple days and my mom is in town for a few days. We spent $20 on food and coffee while out on Saturday. 2. Any progress towards goals? Usual into savings/down payment fund. 3. Do you celebrate St. Patrick's Day? If so, what will you do? Somewhat. We do some little stuff with the kids but nothing big. Last year we did green shamrock pancakes.

  • 1. How MM was your weekend?

Okay. We spent Saturday at the mall getting DD's 7 month pictures done (pre-paid once per month photo package - $30 for 12 photo sessions, one sheet per month, which we bought way back when she was a newborn! Such a great deal) and DH and I went to a memorial that evening.  We went to Moe's for dinner afterwards and used the money we basically saved in groceries earlier in the week.  Sunday we spent $0.

    2. Any progress towards goals?

    Not this week

    3. Do you celebrate St. Patrick's Day?

We really don't.  I always have ideas to make rice crispy treats with Lucky Charms and green milk but I have yet to ever do either of these things.
  • 1. How MM was your weekend?

Umm no comment. I bought a car! I got a certified pre-owned 2013 Ford Edge with 45k miles on it for less then 20k. We put 12,300 down and we ended up with a less then 9k loan at 1.9% interest for 3 years at 255/month which is still 100 less a month then i was paying for my nitro before i paid it off. I love it and the debt doesnt bother me so much because its so small and even if it took us a full 3 years to pay off we'd only pay 300 in interest over the life of the loan. We're going to work on piling through my student loans as much as we can for the next year or so and see where we're at.

    2. Any progress towards goals?

Technically i took a 9k step back but my H and I are taking a whole new approach to things now. My accident has definitely taught us a few things.

    3. Do you celebrate St. Patrick's Day? If so, what will you do?

Before kids we would go out for some drinks or something but now i'll be lucky if i remember to put my son in a green shirt. lol

Hooray for new car!  That's a good interest rate too.  I love my 2013 Edge... although I'm at almost 75k on mine! :)
  • @KatieCutie05, congrats on the new car!!!  I was just thinking about your accident post the other day and was wondering what you had decided.  How is your wrist doing?
  • Thanks! My wrist is doing pretty good. i just got back from the orthopedist and no fracture! He said it may be tendonitis or a sprain, time will tell. but my bones are all intact and i can start taking it out of the brace to move it occasionally next week so it doesnt get too stiff.
