Anyone making Easter baskets this year?  How much do you plan to spend and what types of items do you include?

Re: Easter baskets

  • I'm making one for the Korean Dr. that we have living with us this month.  It will have a chocolate rabbit and some other candy for a total of about $5.

I'm not hosting this year so that is all I'll be making.  We are going to my parents' house and my mom will likely spend $5-$10 on our baskets of the typical bunny, peeps and chocolates.
  • Nope. But personally, Cadbury creme eggs are pretty much my heaven (speaking of, I may set a calendar reminder to check for Monday morning deals..) Peeps though, those things are beyond disgusting.

That is so nice!!  What a great way to include him in some Western holiday traditions.

Ours are all set for the girls. I made their easter baskets 2 years ago with a super heavy weight felt and lined them, added embroidery details (tutorial from purl soho: http://www.purlsoho.com/create/2012/03/22/super-simple-felt-easter-basket/)

They each get a book, funko pop figure (they've been wanting once since I bought DH Mr. Met for his birthday), new water bottle, and almond m&ms (their favorite). We also got them the Aristocats DVD to share- we rented it from the library and they loved it. It was around $50 for everything and their dentist will be very happy that they didn't get much candy.  :)

  • I reuse the same baskets every year, the same plastic eggs and the same fake green grass. The kids will each get a chocolate bunny, jelly beans, and some Resse's Peanut Butter cups.
  • I did.. I spent probably about $15. Mainly stuff from the dollar store, a book, stuffed animal, some chalk, a wind up toy, a paint thingy, and some candy (that I'll prob end up eating lol). I bought a basket since it's my first year doing it- it'll be reused for forever, same with the grass I bought!

As she gets older, it'll mainly be food/candy, a book and stuffed animal.

  • This is such a nice idea. Some of my family members used to make these many years ago. Dollar stores are perfect for situations like this. You can find stuff at most dollar stores that would cost much more anywhere else.
  • We reuse the same baskets each year. For our boys, it varies. This year they will get a chocolate cross, each is getting a game (thank you after Christmas clearance!), some snacks/candy, fun character socks, a book, etc. Last year one got a small sandbox and the other a bike. I do baskets for my nieces and nephew too!

  • I did Easter baskets for my 3 kids and my niece.  They aren't actually baskets as we'll be traveling so I am decorating plain brown gift bags.  My DS1and DD2 are ages 4 and 2 and are getting a book, a chocolate cross, a coloring book, crayons and bubbles (each).  My 3 year old niece is getting a book, a little woven purse, bunny ears and Skittles.  My DD2 is nearly 8 months old and will get a book, 2 bibs and a teether.

I bought the books from Scholastic and everything else was from the Dollar Tree.  I spent about $30 for 4 kids which I was pretty happy with.
  • We aren't doing a basket for her this year.  She doesn't understand yet, I'm too cheap, and the grandparents are going to get her more than enough.

  • My family used the same baskets every year when I was growing up; we plan to do the same with our children (seriously can't understand what one does with a new basket every year, who has the space to store it? and if it goes in the garbage, that's just wasteful)

PBK had a sale on baskets a few weeks ago, so I dropped $55 on a large basket and personalized liner...it's beautiful and high quality, I hope she'll love it and use it/keep it for the next 20+ years.

as far as basket stuffers go, I'm basically just dropping anything we've ordered for her recently into the basket. Old Navy had a kids sale a few weeks ago (40% off all kids including sale) and I had $75 in banana republic points from my visa card to spend, so I got her a ton of clothes (and spent $1.08 out of pocket). I also had ordered her a swim diaper, SPF 50 Shirt, and sun hat for the beach this summer, and a few other little developmental toys.

really her basket this year is just so my mom and I can get some cute photos of her in her outfit (another BR$ purchase at the Gap) with her basket (and the basket is large enough I can probably put her in the basket for a photo...it'll be cute.

  • Uh I need to do this this week.  DD is on spring break so I have no free time without her.  We re-use the same basket every year.  I usually try to keep it to around $10.  I like to get her things for the outdoors.  She need some more bubbles.  I'm going to hit the dollar store and target.  I add in 1 chocolate bunny.

  • We do them for the kids. So far we've been able to reuse some cheap felt baskets a relative sent them 3 years ago, and I hope that will continue for a long time. They are fairly small, which makes them easy to fill. They get plenty of candy in the hidden eggs and from relatives, so their baskets will each have a small, foldable kite and maybe some socks and art supplies. Outside of the baskets they are getting one of those big frisbee like toys with a hole in the middle and a bird nest box that you can hang in a window. It has one-way glass, so supposedly the birds won't mind nesting there. Those gifts are to share. We always make sure to have at least one outdoor themed gift to inspire some outdoor play.
  • A little off topic, but I really like the Walmart commercial where a little girl plants jelly beans in the garden.  Then she keeps going out to the garden to check on them but makes sad faces to her parents when nothing is growing.  Then, Easter morning, she goes out to her garden and it is filled with colorful Easter candy and goodies.  So cute!

    YES!!!
  • I contributed a couple things for my niece's Easter basket and egg hunt.  My mom always held an egg hunt for us as kids in the backyard, and now we do the same for my niece.  She's the only kid of the family, so she's pretty spoiled and gets every egg she finds, lol.  I probably spent about $15 on a couple of outdoor games, a t-shirt, and some pencil erasers.

  • I wait until after Easter. Half off Easter candy!

A wise woman indeed ;).  I do the same thing.  I don't really eat candy myself, but my H has a big sweet tooth.  And, although he acts like a big kid when it comes to sweets, he is happier to get the half off candy a day later anyway.
  • I got a kinder egg stuffed animal thing (are those really illegal in the USA?), shopkins galore, some summer clothes, jelly beans and a CD for my 6 year old so far.

Yes they are!! My DD will see them on you tube and I had to tell her they are illegal here and then she proceeded to explain to me how she would open and eat it and not choke. We love shopkins here too lol - season 4 is out now.

  • Learn something new!  I had no idea what a Kinder egg was and had to go look it up, lol.

And yeah, apparently there have been incidents where people have been held for a few hours at the US/Canada border because they were caught trying to bring a Kinder egg into the US.  I mean, I know ignorance of the law is no excuse, but if I ran into one of these while traveling through Canada, it would never remotely occur to me they were illegal in the States.

Me, speaking with a mouth full of Kinder egg chocolate and fiddling with the little toy, "What?  What do you mean, Customs Officer, that I can't bring chocolate and the small toy it was wrapped around into the US?"

  • you can kinder eggs on ebay and amazon, but I've never tried it.

Oh man re: kinder eggs! I think it's so ridiculous how they are banned in the US!! We lived in Germany for a few years when I was little and we practically lived on those things. When H and I went back for our honeymoon one of the first things I purchased was a kinder egg...and you had better believe that I snuck the plastic shell and the little toy back in with me!
  • Crap. I bought the candy a few weeks ago and I put it somewhere in the house and now we're going out of town tomorrow for the Holiday and I cannot find it!!! I was JUST at Target this morning too!

  • I've been enjoying all of your responses!.

It is funny how people mentioned using the same baskets every year.  It never occurred to me that people might not do this!  Growing up we knew which basket was ours by it being "our" basket that was used every year.

@maple2 I love the idea of a kite!  I need to do that for a future Easter basket!
  • Just got her stuff today - 1 pack of shopkins, 1 my little pony blind bag, a my little pony tshirt, bubbles, bubble gun, peeps, egg gum, and a cute little lady bug pot that she can plant seeds and see grass grow.
