Hi and Reintro

Hi everyone and Happy Easter!  I am hoping you all will have my back after a bit of a break from the boards.  I needed to take some time away to focus on work, which has gotten pretty  stressful.  In a way I am glad that I did, because once I shut myself off I realized that TB, as comforting as it is for many, was contributing to some anxiety about TTC for me.  I've missed the great tips and friendly people from MM, however, and would love to jump back in here if you will have me.

MM-wise, our biggest project in the past few weeks was getting through our trip to Amsterdam.  It was amazing, and I am happy to report that it does not NEED to be quite as expensive as its reputation.  We saved a lot by staying in a great AirBnb (though we had to grapple with a last minute cancellation by our original host while driving to the airport!), taking day trips instead of moving hotels , and buying a wonderful nationwide museum card (the Museumkaart).  We also took a great day trip to Brussels exactly one week before last week's tragedy, which has been so sobering to think about.  I know many others were planning trips to this region when I was last around, and I'd be glad to share more information about our trip if anyone would like.

Now that we are home, our new goal is to pay down some small low-interest debts we have.  Although we're not debt averse, we see this as a good time to clear budget room while TTC.  If and when TTC becomes successful, we'll switch to a savings-dominated strategy.  We just received our reimbursement check for H's major dental work, and will be paying off our (0% offer) stove and my (4%) car loan as soon as it clears!  Hooray!  The next vacation we are daydreaming about is Austria, or perhaps Bonaire if our next trip ends up being post-baby, but realistically it's time to focus on more practical goals.

I hope all has been well with everyone here!  Tried to get caught up a bit this afternoon, relaxing after Easter fun.  Look forward to being involved again.

Glad you're back!! And I'm glad you're safe and had a good trip. I was wondering where you've been!

One of the best parts about this board is that we're all different but we're all respectful of each other's differing philosophies. I haven't found that grace and kindness on The Bump. The behaviors exhibited there are downright disgusting IMO.

Anyways, good luck with your money goals, and look forward to hearing your wise advice here on MM!

  • Thank you both!  You are kind to call my advice wise; I definitely learn a lot more than I contribute around here!  I'm looking forward to work settling down a bit in the next few weeks so I have more time and mental bandwidth.

I certainly don't mean to hate on TB.  Although I see the problems you see, @als1982, people were mostly kind to me and I did learn a lot.  I just found that I got a little bit "sucked in" and was spending too much time researching and worrying about baby stuff before I am pregnant or had even been TTC that long (we're just now in month 4).  I trend towards obnoxious over-planning anyway and figure that pre-baby is a good time to work on going with the flow.  For me, that is.  I know everyone has different approaches that work for them!

I was the same way the first time TTC as well - I even bought a test at target to check to make sure I was ovulating.  OBs have told me to start taking prenatals already but I won't until I get pregnant, but I do take a multi vitamin for women.  I won't even go back to the bump either - before the mass exodus there were a lot of mean girls on there.  Don't have time for that drama.

That's awesome! We really only dipped our toe into Belgium, but we totally fell in love with the Netherlands. Such an amazing country.
  • welcome back! I definitely found TB overwhelming, and I even took a breif hiatus from here the end of last year.

  • Welcome back! Glad you enjoyed your trip! Sounds like you will be completing some goals so that's great too!
  • Good to see you back!  I'm glad you all had a great trip, though I can definitely understand how sobering it must have been to have been in Brussels just a week before the bombings.

Good luck with the TTCing, paying down the small debts (woo hoo on the car/stove loans soon to be paid off), and perhaps future saving for the Austria trip.

We went to Belgium about 4 weeks after they shut down the city after the Paris attack in November.  There were lots of armed guards - actually there were a couple armored cars permanently parked outside our hotel for the duration of our stay - but otherwise it was business as usual.  The guards were stationed all around the Grand Place, but they were really friendly.  They were happy to look at our map with us and help us find where we were going.

We took a day trip to Amsterdam on Christmas Day, and they were making everybody who got off at Schipol answer questions and show ID.  Just make sure you have your passports on you at all times in case you get stopped by a guard or your train is searched.  It's the law there anyway, but they are randomly enforcing it now.

My H is a Belgian citizen (dual), but it was my first trip over there.  I have to say I absolutely fell in love with it, even though it was winter and the security situation was tight.  The Flemish portion of Belgium and the Netherlands are architecturally and culturally very similar.  I love the Mediterranean countries, but something about Belgium and the little bit of the Netherlands we saw really spoke to me.  I want to revisit that region before going back to London or Paris.

Also, the Galeries Saint-Hubert in Brussels (right off of the Grand Place) has a Neuhaus chocolate shop with an annex selling chocolate mousse to go.  They serve it in a cup like ice cream, and you get to pick a topping.  That was easily the best 4 euros we spent there.

  • @Xstatic, glad you are back!  I've spent a little time on TB because we want to TTC at the end of the year, but it scared me off.  I figure starting a family is stressful enough without the drama.

  • Thanks for the re-welcome, guys!

Our experience in Brussels was really similar to yours, @hoffse.  Guards everywhere, but otherwise totally fine.  I'm sure it could be different now, however.  We did end up somewhat off the beaten path, in the commune of Anderlecht, to go to a brewery we really wanted to visit (Cantillon-highly recommended) and although I don't really know if it was a safe neighborhood or not, it felt like more of a "look really confident and watch your purse" type of situation than the areas around the Grand Place.  The architecture was so beautiful.  I'm glad I got to see it, and hope to see more of Belgium on a future trip.

I think anyone going anywhere in Belgium should probably budget a solid 50-100 euros to spend on chocolate to bring home.  We did this for most of our family gifts.  It's truly, truly better than anything I've had in the States.  We did our big purchase at Frederic Blondeel.  We also brought home a few bottles of beer, which was very nerve wracking but ultimately successful, and some Dutch cheese, which is legal but will land you in the slow lane at customs.

Amsterdam is probably my current favorite city in the world.  H and I both feel like we could be happy living there.  It felt extremely safe, probably safer than the city we live in.  The efficiency of the public transportation is truly amazing.  We never needed a car or a cab.  I wish I'd been brave enough to try biking!  Of course, it's still a big city so we took the standard travelling precautions.  Nobody asked to see any sort of identification at any point when we took the Thalys to Belgium, which really surprised me.  Again, I'm guessing that is probably different now.
  • Welcome back!!!! Sorry the bump turned you off, but I agree people can get way to snarky at times. I haven't logged in over there in months, I just stick to my Facebook birth month boards.

Thanks!  I didn't mind the snark so much.  I just think I'm one of those people who needs to shut myself away from all baby and parenting related internet media.  I also cut myself off from babycenter, scary mommy, all of it.  I found myself lying there in savasana at the end of each yoga class with my brain swimming with worries about cycle days, the cost of daycare, birth plans, maternity leave, resigning from my dive job, etc. etc. when I really have very little control over when and how this will happen for me.  Once I cut myself off from it all, I went back to worrying about things like work, travel, and spring races, which I can control.  Now I just keep a bit of an eye on my cycle for testing and drinking purposes and I'm feeling much more relaxed.

Agreed with both of the bolded!

We spent over 150 euros on chocolate on our trip.  Maybe excessive, but it was the bulk of our Christmas shopping, and we were buying for people who had specific favorites.  It's true that Belgian chocolate is on another level entirely.  Neuhaus has a couple stores in the states, and they fly it over from Belgium every day, so it's less than 24 hours old when you buy it.

It completely spoiled my H growing up.  That's what he would eat while other kids were eating Hershey's.  He thinks American chocolate tastes waxy, and he won't eat most of it.

The one thing I wish we had made time for in Belgium was a visit to Maredsous.  They are one of the larger monasteries that makes their own beer and cheese.  Last time FIL went he brought back an entire bag of the cheese.  It's soooooo good, and it literally cannot be found here.

Next time we visit we're going to try to do more than a week so that we can see more of the Netherlands too.  I felt similar to you in that I could live in either of those places.  Rome is still my favorite city to visit, but I don't think I could live there long-term.

  • (Happily fantasizing about Belgian beer, cheese, and chocolates...though, alas, I've never had any of it)

You can get some decent Belgian beer at home! My favorite "splurge" that's commonly available is Delirium Tremens. There's also a NY brewery called Ommegang that trained at one of the Belgian Trappist monasteries and replicates the style very well. @hoffse, I looked up Neuhaus and there's one in Boston. Very excited! I was somewhat hampered in my chocolate tasting in Belgium by the unfortunate combination of a nut allergy and a language barrier. I was limited to choices with ingredient labels to be safe.

You sound like me LOL.  I would worry that I will have a horrible pregnancy again so I've been saving up gig money in case I need to pay one of our players to sub for me for gigs.  I hope for the best but plan for the worst.

Our yoga studio is really big into visualizing what you want and where you want to be, so during chanting I would visualize a healthy and happy pregnancy and a successful vbac, but I"m done with that now lol.  I will focus more on that when the time comes.

I'll have to check with the passport - we're on a river cruise and the last one we went on, they held them the duration - I think it's because we visited multiple countries and it facilitates any type of passport control.   No trains.  Heck, I'm nervous enough just being in the airport!  I know anything can happen at anytime anywhere, but it's unsettling.  I'm a worrier.  I'll add we didn't plan on going to Brussels - we were going to choose the excursion to Bruges.  But I did hear from the cruise line that they cut Brussels completely out anyway.

I told my DH that we should plan on spending close to 200 Euros on chocolate - we'll have to bring some back for some people, and I want to make sure I bring enough back for us. ;)
