Going Back To Work Soon

I will be going back to work soon, and am having a really hard time with it.  As I am sure all parents do .... So my question is.  Did you start bringing your LO to daycare for few hours at a time prior to you going back to work?  How many times did you do that, and how long did you leave LO there for?  Any other advice you can share to make this a bit easier?

Re: Going Back To Work Soon

  • I only brought her 1 time to daycare before she went there for the whole day.  We went for about and hour and just hung out a little.  She was only 3 months, so at that point she didn't really get it.  I don't think I really needed to do it.

The transition back to work, that's an entirely different story.  It helped me to be busy the first couple of weeks.  I've been back for 10 months and still have days where all I want to do is be home with LO.  It helps to have pictures at my desk as well, and I love thumbing through the pictures of her on my phone when I'm feeling like I need a little pick me up.

  • That's what I keep telling everyone.  She will be fine, its me that will be a mess!

I seriously cried this morning when I started to think about going back to work.  She will be 4 months old when I go to work.  I could stay home with her longer, but then we will be living paycheck to paycheck, and I don't want to do that to our family either.  So I just keep telling myself, its better that I go to work.

    Thanks for your feedback.
  • That's us as well.  We COULD make it, but it would be way too tight for comfort.  So I continue to work.
As much as I would like to be home with DD, I have to put myself into the mindset that I come to work every day so that we can provide her with things later on in life.  Like her college fund and us putting into retirement so she doesn't have to care for us later. It also helps that we have a provider we absolutely love.  She obviously see's DD more than we do, but I know that she does things with her that we wish we could.  Rather than looking at those as negative things, like we're missing out, I look at them as positives.  DD is getting socialized and learning how to play with other kids, and she is also learning sign language, how to point at body parts, and play independently. I walked in after work the other day and our provider was tickling her like crazy and getting those cute deep belly laughs.  When I used to nanny, the moms would get sad or mad if they saw this, because they want that moment with their child.  However, it helps that I tell myself it just shows that our sitter loves her just as much as we do, and DD loves her and feels comfortable with her.  That helps me feel a lot more at ease with her being there 9-10 hours every day.
It has taken some time to get there though, and understand that you will have days where you wish you could be home.  I still have days where I text H and tell him I don't want to be at work and want to be home with DD.  I still struggle with this whole working mom thing, but it helps to remind myself that I'm not the only one to have gone back to work after having a baby.

  • We didn't send her before I went back to work. Now, really, we have family that come to our house and watch her but I still didn't have anyone do that before I went back. I wanted every moment with her.

As far as being back, it was so hard the first few days. But I was also sooooo busy fixing all the crap that people messed up while I was away I hardly had time to miss her. I'm still fixing shit they messed up. I fear if we have more when I have to go on leave again. I did have and still do have, the people watching her send pictures and stuff throughout the week. So that helps. And lots of pictures and videos on my phone.

  • I brought him to daycare beginning on a Monday.  He went a half a day.  He went full days on Tuesday and Wednesday, and I went back to work on Thursday.  I'm glad that we eased in to it.  I cried a lot that Monday and it was nice to know that I could get through it without trying to also get through my first week at work.
