I'm going to cry now. :(

The upstairs A/C unit stopped working last night.  Had the repair people come out today and there's definitely a leak.  Having them estimate a new unit.
:((

Done this before in another house, so I know it won't be cheap.....

We get ours checked every year- it's starting to show its wear.. hopefully we can make it another 3-4 years before we need to replace. Our HVAC guy said it's a little less than a furnace. Good luck today!

This unit is original to the house as near as I can tell.  Built in 2001/2002.  Had the compressor done about 3 years ago under a home warranty.  The coils in the upstairs unit have a leak.  They said it's about $1700 with all the labor factored in.  At that point I'm just going to replace it.

At the last house, it was $6400.  They told my neighbour about $4800 for hers (we have a slightly bigger house), but that was the service techs and not the estimator

It is what it is and we have the cash on hand.  Would rather use it for other things, but this is what emergency funds are for.

  • Wait, wait, wait, wait!!!  I actually just had this happen to one of the units at my rental duplex.

It was a pretty old unit, but I had it reconditioned when I was doing all of the other rehabbing for $1,000.  Than, as soon as my new tenants moved in, the A/C stopped working because of a leak.  Talk about a huge let down!  Of course, A/C guy who did the reconditioning couldn't be found.  New A/C guy suggested he could run some type of goop through the lines and that should plug up any leaks.

It was a $200 service and it's not guaranteed nor could he even promise it would work at all.  But fortunately it did.  That was about two months ago.  I'm sure I'll have to get new equipment at some point within the next few years, but if that $200 even bought me an extra year it was well worth it.

I'll talk to my H tonight and get more specific details on what was done and re-post.

How old is your furnace, and what kind of shape is it in? I ask because we were in pretty much the same situation two years ago - there was a leak in our AC that would have cost us $2200 to repair. A new AC unit was $3700 and a new AC and a new furnace was $4800. It sort of went against my grain to replace the furnace when there wasn't anything wrong with it, but we had the cash and for only $1100 more it made sense to just do the whole thing.

This is pretty much where I'm at.  The unit is due and I take my AC seriously. :)

  • yep its not cheap we've had a quote for around $5k but ours is still running and we will use it till it dies.
  • We just put in a compressor in our house a year ago, it was $2800 (builder wanted $4000).  Even though we had the cash, we ended up doing a 0 interest for 1 year deal with the HVAC guy, and paid it off in  like 6 months.  This was the kind that sits outside.  We paid the builder $300ish or something like that to have it all pre-wired.
