Rome hotels?

Ok, I know there's a few of you who have also travelled, so thought I'd ask.  Any recommended hotels in Rome?  Would like to balance the feeling of being in Rome with modern amenities. :)

We are staying at the Salotto Monti in a few weeks.  I'll let you know how it goes.  It's a boutique hotel (maybe 12 rooms?) and not crazy fancy but gets great reviews, and they have a large breakfast on an outdoor terrace that's included in the price.  I booked through hotels.com and their concierge emailed me with transportation options, offers to make reservations, etc. within 12 hours.  I have been emailing with them back and forth, and they always respond promptly.  So far I have been impressed.  I'll try to remember to report back when we return in early July.

Is this your first visit?  If so, I would recommend staying in the Piazza Navona/Campo dei Fiori area.  We are staying in the Monti neighborhood because a lot of Romans live there.  I took Italian in college, and even though I'm pretty bad I enjoy practicing it when I have the chance.  But if it's your first visit and you speak no Italian, Piazza Navona/Campo dei Fiori is where it's at.

Rome and is kind of shaped like a diamond.  The Spanish steps, Villa Borghese, and Piazza del Popolo are to the north, Colosseum and Forum are to the south, Vatican is to the west, and Santa Maria Maggiore & Termini train station are to the east.   Piazza Navona & Campo dei Fiori are kind of in the middle.  The metro doesn't run through the middle of the diamond (too many ruins to excavate underground), but if you stay there you can walk to most of those places within 15-20 minutes.

If you are planning a couple day trips and need to stay near a metro stop so that accessing the train station is easy, I recommend staying near the Barberini metro stop or the Spanish Steps.  It's more expensive, but very very nice.  The US embassy is at the Barberini metro stop, so that's the area where politicians often stay.

I'm excited that several of us are going to Rome this year!  I spent a summer there in college, and it's still my favorite city in the world.  There's nothing else quite like it.

  • It's been 10 years since I was in Rome, so I can't guarantee the place I stayed has stayed as nice as it once was - but it was the hotel literally next to the Spanish Steps and it was super convenient.

Have you considered Airbnb? We just did that for our Amsterdam and Paris trip last month and it worked out really well. We had a minor hiccup in Paris and had to move to another apartment that the host owned (construction on the building we were supposed to stay in wasn't finished) but they comped us two nights for the inconvenience so kind of worth the minor irritation of moving after the first night. And the Amsterdam apartment was perfect with zero issues. In the end 9 nights in Europe cost us a grand total of $900.

Yeah VRBO and AirBnB can work great.  We debated it and ended up going with hotels on this trip because my parents are going to come along too, and we thought that the familiarity and convenience of hotels made sense for them.  But we did VRBO in southern France when it was just us, and H and I really enjoyed it.

The only minor issue is that most apartments won't hold luggage for you, so if you land early in the morning you'll typically have to store your luggage at a train station or something before you can get into the apartment.

  • My friend who has gone to Rome a number of times has used AirBnB for the last couple trips.  She has told me she saves a lot of money that way and, although you can still be near the tourist spots, the neighborhood of your accommodations will be locals.

I asked for the specific place she stayed last time.  She didn't really remember but said it doesn't matter because there are tons of AirBnB choices all over the city.
