NYT Article - Panama papers/tax havens
Thought the MM board would find this an interesting read. Front page of the NYT yesterday - expose article naming several US executives and companies that engaged a Panamanian law firm to shelter assets in offshore accounts. The "Panama Papers" were leaked a couple months ago. This is the first article I have seen naming US people/entities. Some notable clients of this law firm: Vladimir Putin, David Cameron's family, Iceland's (former) prime minister who stepped down over his name being leaked.... and many other international players.
Note that not everything they were doing was illegal... but I suspect some stuff was, and they definitely skirted the very edges of what is permitted, at least under US law.
EDIT: Also, in a fit of nostalgia I watched The Firm last night. Great movie. This sounds like a real life example!
