MM Wins and Losses

So this has been an eventful two days!

MM Win:  We finally got a tenant for our 4-bedroom unit.  My poor H had been doing multiple showings a day for the last couple weeks.  That will be an extra $1,140/month in the budget.  The expenses for the unit are already included in my budget, because most of those exist whether a tenant lives there or not!

MM Loss:  It started as an MM Win.  I took two hours of vacation time off work today to participate in a 1-hour forum that paid $75.  Except I got a bad blow out on the way there.  Sidewall ripped up and everything.  So no money from the forum, because I didn't make it.  And still had to use vacation time because it took me just as long to get my car towed and then get back to work.

And it wasn't just the one tire.  Although the treads are still in decent shape, the tires themselves are old and all of them have at least some dry rot.  Which is why the one tire blew out so easily.  So it was recommended I get ALL the tires replaced.  Plus I paid for a lifetime alignment ($169) and tire "insurance" for three years ($18/each).  Probably got suckered on those two, not sure either one was a good idea.  But it gave me piece of mind.  The tires themselves were $112/each, but they are "run flats", so I felt like that was a pretty good deal.

After $50 off for applying for and putting the charge on a Firestone credit card with no interest for 6 months...yup, talked me into that also with the $50 discount, lol...the damage to my wallet was $800.  Meh!  I know, new tires are one of those "expected expenses" with a car, but it is still a big chunk of change when the time comes.

Guess I'll be taking $200 of that new rent money for the next 4 months to pay off the Firestone card in plenty of time before interest hits!

Re: MM Wins and Losses

  • The alignment was a good idea.  The tires will wear more evenly when everything is properly aligned, so that wasn't a bad purchase!

I hope your new renters work out, that extra money would be awesome!

  • Congrats on the new renters!  Tires stink!  We all know they need to be replaced but it never seems to be at a good time.  Tires are one of the things H actually takes our vehicles in for.  We use a tire shop that does free rotation and alignments as long as the tires are purchased through them.  Their prices are always pretty good.

  • I agree.  The alignment was a good idea.  My personal thought is the tire insurance is a waste of time.  The only think I've replaced tires for is wear and tear and that's not covered. :(

  • Thanks for the feedback!  You all are making me feel better about going with the lifetime alignment.  Plus NOLA is notorious for potholes.  I once saw a "top ten" for worst cities for potholes.  Boston was #1 and NOLA was #2.  Both port cities, not very sturdy ground.

@jtmh2012, I'm always a little side-eye about the tire insurance.  I used it once with a different car and between the pro-ration, plus I was still charged all the little shop fees, it barely paid for itself.  On the good side, when I got my final bill, because I bought "run flats", I was given a 25% discount on the tire insurance.  So it only came out to be an extra $60 instead of $80.

I was glad the run flats were so affordable.  The trunk of my MINI is less than half the size of a typical passenger vehicle, so there isn't room for a spare.  Even for my small tires, they were over $200/tire when I looked into it a couple years ago.  The lady at Firestone told me they've really dropped in price over the last year or so.

Yikes!!! Sounds like you didn't get taken on the alignment service though...with so many potholes around it's probably worth paying for. As for me, I don't get an alignment unless I'm getting new tires or I've hit a curb hard with my wheels and I'm noticing issues, so it wouldn't be worthwhile for me. Congrats on the new tenants though! I hope they're good ones who stick around for a long time!

One thing I've started to take into account now with a new car is the cost of tires. My old Mazda3 had a factory alignment that actually made my rear tires wear unevenly because they were aligned in a sport type of way that made it hug the curves more. So anyway, I was replacing tires WAY more often than I should have...plus they were low profile which meant you never get close the full mileage out of them anyway. My CX-3 has the more standard tires so I expect to spend a lot less money over time with them. I can't even imagine having to spend $800 for a new set!

My MM win for the week is I got a small raise at work! It doesn't amount to a whole lot...I think around $40 a paycheck after taxes and all my deductions, but it's still something more. It was nice to at least get one when I know many many people at my company got nothing.

So far so good, minimal symptoms and no weight gain so far (actually lost 5 pounds but I'm overweight, so no biggie).  Baby has consistently measures small, but within the margin of error.  We go in next Saturday for an elective 3D ultrasound to determine the sex.  All the grandparents and aunt and uncles are coming (total of 6 additional people) so we all find out together.
good luck! Make sure you give us the details!
  • @labro, congrats on the raise!  Even a smaller raise adds up to a nice amount over the course of a month or a year.  And can add up exponentially if used to boost a retirement account or pay down mortgage principal.

@AprilZ81, Glad to hear everything is going well!  That's awesome everyone is coming to the "gender reveal" dr. appointment.  Exciting!

I just checked mine they're $982 for a set of 4 plus installation for the original equipment tires.

    I think I just fainted a little....

Even our pick-up tires don't cost that much!

That's so exciting!  we had both of our moms in the room for the gender scan at 20 weeks.  We aren't pregnant yet but I've already thought of so much stuff I would do different with #2 and I want to do some sort of gender reveal so its a surprise for everyone and only DH and I know the sex.
  • What a drag about the new tires, @short+sassy!  Sounds like you handled it the best way possible.  New tires always take me by surprise and bug the heck out of me too, even though it's a predictable expense.

Glad all is going well, @AprilZ81!  Have fun at your ultrasound.  You're so sweet to involve all of your parents!

    Congrats on the raise, @labro!
