Wayfair Furniture Delivery - Tip?

Our nursery furniture will be delivered on Friday (WOOHOO!!!!).  I found it on clearance on Wayfair and it is super high quality furniture and I'm getting 3 pieces (convertible crib, double dresser, nightstand) for about what the crib is when it is at full retail price.

Delivery is free and they are delivering it to the entryway, but not upstairs.  I'm going to ask them to "pretty please with sugar on top" ask them to take it upstairs for me.

What would you tip them if they do?  And if they only bring it inside the door would you tip at all?

They would be carrying it up one set of stairs and the nursery is right at the top.

I personally wouldn't ask them to bring it upstairs, and I wouldn't tip.

I have never tipped.  The delivery people will usually bring it into the entryway for you and then maybe help you place it if the room is right there, but I don't think they will move it up the stairs.  I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure Wayfair lets you pay extra to have it moved anywhere in your house, but the free delivery option does not include that.

  • I've only tipped if the delivery guys had to do something extraordinary to get a piece of furniture into my home. The last few furniture deliveries were so smooth I didn't have a chance to tip them! I heard them yell "you're all set ma'am!" as they shut the door behind them lol.
  • I'm not sure how wayfair gets delivered, but I suppose it can't hurt to ask.  Worst they can say is no.  I've never tipped furniture delivery people, but I think I'd offer if they actually take it upstairs.

  • Congrats on the good deal with the nursery furniture!

If it were me, I'd offer $40 to take the furniture upstairs.  But I doubt the moving person would agree to move it.  As other PPs have pointed out, there are usually different price points for how far they will take the items.  I suspect there are probably even strict rules that don't allow them to take tips to move items past what they have been contracted for.

My mom shipped a large, antique armoire for me that has been in our family for over 100 years.  There were three different price points.  Curbside, front door, or wherever you wanted it in the house (with different prices again, depending on the number of stories).  I was shocked there was a difference between curbside and front door.  But there was and it was a good sized difference.  Around $60.

  • I've ordered from Wayfair many times.  I don't tip.  I'm not sure I ever have for any kind of large delivery.  Shoot, sometimes I'm not even home when they decide to show up and they just leave it on the porch.

This is where I'm at on this
  • I've never tipped for furniture delivery, but I might if they go that extra step for you. I'm guessing, however, that they won't be allowed to. A lot of delivery companies keep their staff to crazy strict time schedules.

Enjoy getting the nursery together! Very exciting!

We wouldn't have ordered so early but I found a great price and the color I wanted was the only one on clearance.  I suspect they are discontinuing the color so we decided to jump on it.

  • Hi. I have done furniture and large appliance delivery before. If placing it in its designated location is part of the service they offer, then no, I don't tip the delivery people.

However, in 2015, when we bought a bunch of items from Macy's for our family room, I did ask the two movers if I paid them each $20 cash if they wouldn't mind carrying our old, long sofa to the basement, down a flight of stairs. They said "yes" almost immediately.

I didn't tip them for the furniture that was new from Macy's and I would not have. I technically paid them to move other furniture that had nothing to do with the Macy's purchase.

My thought, is I wouldn't ask unless I was willing to part with at least $10 per mover (no more than $20 per mover). But, you have to decide how tough it will be for you or your husband to move the items.

With our sofa, I knew it would be a pain and DH would have to ask neighbors to help. I figured the worst they could say was "No." And $40 ended up being worth it.

Totally understand! Sounds like a great buy. I'm a bit over-eager to get our nursery furniture, but we're just going with IKEA stuff that's not going anywhere so I'm trying to make myself wait another few months.

We had to go to two different Ikeas to get the color we wanted since the one was out of stock and they had no idea when they were getting more. PSA - secure the dressers and book shelves to the wall when putting the nursery together. You will forget when the baby is mobile. Says the mom who heard that horrible thud of my kid pulling his dresser down.  Thankfully he was fine.

Oh thank goodness he was ok! How scary. I'm pretty uptight about securing things to the wall already since we have kids visit us a lot, but the big IKEA recall was definitely a sobering reminder. Good tip on starting early to get the right colors! Although, I think my color scheme is just going to have to be eclectic since we've been handed down a nice rocking chair that will match nothing.
