Decisions, decisions

I'm about to order some new glasses from Warby Parker.

I'm trying to decide if I can pull off cobalt blue glasses in the office.

Background note 1: We recently went to casual Fridays, and all of the millenials made a pact to start wearing jeans.  A few of the partners were really uncomfortable with casual Friday until one of them cracked and wore a golf shirt one day.  Now their ranks are starting to show signs of weakness, and they are consistently going more casual too.  Casual Friday is definitely here to stay.

Background note 2: I work in the corporate group.  We almost never see clients face-to-face, and we don't go to court.  So we basically just dress up for each other.

Here are the glasses:

Can we vote on this?

  • I like the blue, but I feel like I'd get tired of it and/or feel like the rest of my outfit had to match it all the time.

    Love the description!  So funny.

I like the style of the glasses and the Cobalt blue is a nice color, but definitely bright and out of the "norm" for a stuffy office.  I think it would be fine for the Casual Fridays, but maybe a bit too much for Mon.-Thurs.?  Especially since your questioning it.

This.  But for Warby Parker prices, I'd just pick up a tortoise pair too.  I vote yes and I'm a stickler for professional dress and appearance in the work place.

  • I vote yes overall, enthusiastically, but hesitate for my perception of what a big law office is like.

My quick pet peeve.  Flip flops in an office environment.  It's just WAY too casual, even for a more relaxed office.  They technically aren't allowed where I currently work or at a previous job, but that did/does not stop a few select individuals at each from wearing them on an almost daily basis anyway.
  • I love the blue and think it would look great!  Just a thought, I'm assuming you go to work every day, even casual Fridays, very put together.  So given that, I think you can definitely pull the frames off!

  • I vote yes! Especially for casual Fridays in a division that doesn't see clients or go to court. Would you hesitate to wear a shirt or jewelry in that color? If not then I don't see why glasses should be much different.
  • I like the glasses.  There is a woman in my office that wears red glasses.  I remembered her after meeting her only once; not something I can say for every person in the office.  And if someone is referring to her but they don't remember/know her name they just say the woman with the red glasses.  Thankfully they don't call her Sally Jessy....but a lot of people here are probably too young to know that one.

My office dress code is casual.  Shorts, jeans, hoodies, flip flops are the norm.  Baseball caps and other types of hats are also acceptable.  But the dress reflects our industry so it makes sense.  Yeah, we are one of those offices where the marketing department has a ping pong table.
  • Oh yeah, I forgot to mention - I would definitely get the tortoise pair.  My prescription has changed so I need to replace a couple pairs.  The blue would be a secondary pair primarily for casual Friday and/or days when we all need some extra color around the office (it's very beige).

My go-to outfit tends to be black cigarette pants, patent leather ballet flats, and a colorful top.  Sleeveless is acceptable in this office during the summer, as long as it's conservative (nothing that reads tank top).

I tone down the color palette on those rare days when I meet with clients and such, but most of them time it's really the same 8 or 10 people I see day in/day out.

  • Just curious.....have you ever considered contacts or having the laser surgery done?

    I've had both.......

    Nah, too expensive.

Anyway, I don't wear them as much as I probably should.  It's mostly for the computer.

Ah.  I had to wear mine from the time I woke up to the time I went to bed.  I could see well enough to make out objects, but couldn't focus on anything enough to read unless it was right in front of me.  Was $3900 or so for both eyes when I had it done and I'm sure it's probably less now.

I'm a little jealous - I'm not a candidate for Lasik so I just get to bumble around until I can find my contacts every morning lol.

I would get the glasses, but I can wear jeans everyday to work.

@csuave - we have a ping pong table too! It's in our cafeteria

This makes me chuckle.  Our office is very very casual.  Not even business casual.  We work primarily with farmers, so they come in with dirt on their boots and laugh at you if you're in a suit.  The typical day here I'm in jeans and a dressy top, but I can't pull myself to wear flip flops on a regular basis.  Strappy sandals, yes.  I'm also known to be the most dressed up in our office.  If I come in with dress pants on, they ask me when I need to leave for a funeral.
It's just so funny how different "casual" can be portrayed.

I am beyond jealous of those of you who can wear jeans!  We do get to wear them on Friday but the rest of the week causual is going sans suit jacket or blazer.

  • I'm jealous of the people with ping pong tables.  Not that I'd use the table, but it says something about the company.

It depends on where they put it. My friend designs offices and she has one client that wants the ping pong table to appear like a cool company - but they put it in a location where it's not really feasible to use it.
  • @csuave and @brij2006, I should have specified!  If the office culture is super casual, ie jeans are allowed, than I don't have an issue with really casual shoes (like flip flops).  But when the dress code is only a notch or two down from suits, flip flops just look weird and inappropriate (imo).
