If you have kids, get a will and life insurance TODAY

A very close friend of mine collapsed in the school drop off line on Monday. She had been fighting some sort of horrible cold or flu and puking a lot. That caused her potassium level to drop and her heart to stop. She went too long without oxygen despite getting CPR very quickly and she's gone.

She never got life insurance because she was a smoker and thought it would be expensive. She had a will. But now her husband has to deal with two little kids while burying their mom.

It it can happen in an instant. Get your will and life insurance TODAY. There are no excuses.

  • @smerka I am so sorry for your loss.

Yes to the will and life insurance.

And also listening to your body and going to the Dr./Hospital if something is off.  That is what health insurance and HSAs are for.
--smerka, I'm not saying your friend didn't do this because obviously I don't know the facts, but I'm saying this based on a recent personal experience that was a little bit similar.

@smerka, I'm so sorry to hear about your friend!  So true, life is very short and none of us know when it will be our time.
  • This is so sad.  What a terrible loss.

Also, get a seasonal flu shot.

I am going to ditto this.  Even if you do not have children yet and as much as it sucks to think about, think fully into what it would entail if you were to pass away right now.  How would your spouse live and would they have the financial ability to be able to take some time off to grieve your loss?  Even without kids a will and life insurance are important.

  • Wow that is terrible.  I'm sorry for your friend's family, and sorry for your loss as well.

I feel like situations like that are exactly what life insurance is for, especially for us younger people.  You can plan pretty well for death in old age, but not so much for something like that.
  • This is terrible, I'm so sorry for your loss.
  • So sorry to hear :(
  • Aw, that is terrible...I'm really sorry for your loss

DH and I are all set up just in case...

  • We have life insurance, but are wee bit behind on the wills. :(

I agree with you about wills and insurance - its hard enough to grieve a spouse's death but then have to worry about the money aspect on top of it makes it worse.  We've had life insurance since we got married almost 7 years ago and got a WILL after DD was born.
  • I'm so very sorry @smerka. Thanks for the reminder. We are good on insurance but absolutely need to get a will.
  • I am sorry to hear about your loss this week.
