Travel Guru's/MM Relatedish - Help me decide!

We're getting ready to book Hawaii and I can't decided on which Airbnb option to go with.

Background: This is our 2nd time to the island of Maui.  Last time we stayed at a resort and had a partial ocean view room.  We spent 1 day in our room/on the resort beach, but we were also trying to cram as much into our short stay there as possible so we didn't have time to be in the room much.  However, we did like having the nice ocean breeze and bit of a view in the mornings and evenings.   We also had an oceanfront room for the 2 days we were in Honolulu and I absolutely loved it.  It was a bit of a splurge, but we spent every minute possible out on the balcony.

Now we're to booking our 2nd trip and will be in Maui for 8 full days.  I can't decide whether or not we should splurge a bit more and do an oceanfront room or save some money and stay a little further from the beack, and of course H is being no help and telling me it's my choice.  He isn't much of a beach layer though.  He stays to the room if he wants a day relaxing and I go lay on the beach for hours.  He's red hair and freckles if that explains why...

Okay.

Oceanfront option:  Is in a more secluded area but is still in a condo.  The view is smack dab on the water and the beach is one of the best ones for snorkeling. The condo has a pool, hot tub, and gym.  It is also within walking distance to a few bars and restaurants. Total cost is $2,060

Cheaper/Inland option:  Is in a very secluded area and have to drive to beach or restaurants (we'll have a rental car). Is a 300sq ft portion of a duplex. Has 1 bedroom but the kitchen/living area is very tight and only has a loveseat.  The outdoor area is a small garden with no views to the ocean.  Total cost is $1,400.

Would you spend the extra $600 and go with the ocean front?
I figure that this time around we won't be as pressed for time so we'll likely spend at least 2 days vegging out reading a book, laying out in the sun, doing low key relaxing things we enjoy.  We will also be eating more meals in this time around since we'll have a full kitchen in either option.
We are splurging for a convertible rental car so I feel like we should try to save somewhere else.  We can make the more expensive option work but then it means less for spending cash on entertainment, meals out, etc.

  • Well I like to spend money, so I'd go for the beach one.  What's the point in going all the way to Hawaii to be cramped with no view of the water?   I also feel like it'd be easier to spend less on entertainment because your entertainment is right there in front of you.

I'm with her. $600 for what you're getting seems BEYOND worth it.
  • I would go oceanfront no question.  is your daughter going? if so, even more I would go oceanfront.  that place sounds better if you are trapped inside for early bedtimes or naps.

  • BTW, I'm not a beach layer either, I just get burned (Irish pale skin etc).  But, I LOVE looking at/being on the water, so even if your H doesn't go down on the beach, he'll probably enjoy looking at it from your condo.
  • This would also be hands-down for me the beach view option.  Especially since you all had really liked that about your Honolulu portion last time.

It's not even just the view.  It also sounds more convenient.  Walking distance to eateries.  Beach right outside the condo building.  Pool/hot tub availability.

Another way to look at it.  It is $82.50/day more expensive.  Is that $80 extra, each night, worth the "upgrade" (so to speak).

    Oooh, I like your thinking.

Gosh, I'm such a cheapass. Travel is usually the area I can easily splurge in, but when I look at a $600 difference I just think of how many things we can do there with that extra $600.

then in that case...I would do the oceanfront.  walking distance to restaurants and bars is a big big draw.  I love when we go on vacation to places where we can walk to dinner.  It's not like we go crazy drinking but it's nice to be able to get an extra glass of wine without thinking about driving
  • Beachfront for me too.  But then, I have started budgeting extra for upgraded seats on the plane, upgraded rooms at the hotel, and private transport whenever I have luggage.

    Worth every penny.

Here you are talking about less than $100/day, so I think it's worth it.

  • I'm going to go against the grain. First let me say though that I have never been to Maui. Only Kauai, Oahu, and Hawaii. When we stayed on Oahu at Christmas time for a wedding, the only place we could find was a home with a room to rent. It was private, in a neighborhood, and small. I remember very fondly sitting on the lanai eating lunch. I can't for the life of me remember the views from any of the ocean front hotels we stayed at. So if the $600 savings allows you to take a helicopter ride, I would strongly suggest that.

I am such a tightwad that I use the same $2 dish scrubber brush thing that I bought when I moved into my house over 7 years ago.  That's how I roll with "stuff."  But vacations and experiences?  I would absolutely 100% pay extra for the ocean view.

  • An extra $600 for oceanfront in Hawaii for 8 days is a no brainer for me!  You can eat "cheap" for breakfast and lunch by eating in the condo and help make up some of that difference.  You can even pack some things like cereal and granola bars to take with you since groceries are pricey in Hawaii.

  • I would definitely opt for the ocean front condo.  DH burns easily and is not a beach guy, but loved sitting on our ocean front condo on our honeymoon.  We had happy hour on it every night!!  We often sat out there when we returned from dinner and played games.  It was worth every penny.

What else would you do with the $600/what would you be giving up for the ocean front condo?

We've actually already done a helicopter tour of Maui so we won't do one again.
We would probably spend the extra money on a dinner out at a fancy restaurant, ATVing, possibly ziplining.
Granted we have enough budgeted to be able to do those things anyways. It's just whether or not we want a larger buffer to have the freedom to do whatever we please while we're there and not worry as much about the money part.

I will say that I know if we get a nicer oceanfront room that we'll be more inclined to cook in the room instead of going out to eat.  That will save us some money but definitely not $600 worth.  We're total foodies but we both love to cook so I'm more than happy to grab stuff from the farmers market or the fishermen in the morning and cook us a nice meal for dinner.

Based on that I think you should go oceanfront.
