Travel Guru's/MM Relatedish - Help me decide!
We're getting ready to book Hawaii and I can't decided on which Airbnb option to go with.
Background: This is our 2nd time to the island of Maui. Last time we stayed at a resort and had a partial ocean view room. We spent 1 day in our room/on the resort beach, but we were also trying to cram as much into our short stay there as possible so we didn't have time to be in the room much. However, we did like having the nice ocean breeze and bit of a view in the mornings and evenings. We also had an oceanfront room for the 2 days we were in Honolulu and I absolutely loved it. It was a bit of a splurge, but we spent every minute possible out on the balcony.
Now we're to booking our 2nd trip and will be in Maui for 8 full days. I can't decide whether or not we should splurge a bit more and do an oceanfront room or save some money and stay a little further from the beack, and of course H is being no help and telling me it's my choice. He isn't much of a beach layer though. He stays to the room if he wants a day relaxing and I go lay on the beach for hours. He's red hair and freckles if that explains why...
Okay.
Oceanfront option: Is in a more secluded area but is still in a condo. The view is smack dab on the water and the beach is one of the best ones for snorkeling. The condo has a pool, hot tub, and gym. It is also within walking distance to a few bars and restaurants. Total cost is $2,060
Cheaper/Inland option: Is in a very secluded area and have to drive to beach or restaurants (we'll have a rental car). Is a 300sq ft portion of a duplex. Has 1 bedroom but the kitchen/living area is very tight and only has a loveseat. The outdoor area is a small garden with no views to the ocean. Total cost is $1,400.
Would you spend the extra $600 and go with the ocean front?
I figure that this time around we won't be as pressed for time so we'll likely spend at least 2 days vegging out reading a book, laying out in the sun, doing low key relaxing things we enjoy. We will also be eating more meals in this time around since we'll have a full kitchen in either option.
We are splurging for a convertible rental car so I feel like we should try to save somewhere else. We can make the more expensive option work but then it means less for spending cash on entertainment, meals out, etc.

This would also be hands-down for me the beach view option. Especially since you all had really liked that about your Honolulu portion last time.
It's not even just the view. It also sounds more convenient. Walking distance to eateries. Beach right outside the condo building. Pool/hot tub availability.
Another way to look at it. It is $82.50/day more expensive. Is that $80 extra, each night, worth the "upgrade" (so to speak).
Oooh, I like your thinking.
Gosh, I'm such a cheapass. Travel is usually the area I can easily splurge in, but when I look at a $600 difference I just think of how many things we can do there with that extra $600.

Worth every penny.
Here you are talking about less than $100/day, so I think it's worth it.
We would probably spend the extra money on a dinner out at a fancy restaurant, ATVing, possibly ziplining.
Granted we have enough budgeted to be able to do those things anyways. It's just whether or not we want a larger buffer to have the freedom to do whatever we please while we're there and not worry as much about the money part.
I will say that I know if we get a nicer oceanfront room that we'll be more inclined to cook in the room instead of going out to eat. That will save us some money but definitely not $600 worth. We're total foodies but we both love to cook so I'm more than happy to grab stuff from the farmers market or the fishermen in the morning and cook us a nice meal for dinner.

Sorry for the tangent! But I have an example of my tightwadness that turned into one of my favorite romantic stories with my H.
I worked at a roofing company in college that ended up going out of business. I was told I could take what I wanted of their supplies. One of the items I took was a jumbo thing of 1000 coffee filters, barely touched. When I moved to NOLA a few years later, darn if I didn't bring that thing with me along with all my other unnecessary junk. Personally, I brew about one pot of coffee/week.
So when my H and I started dating a few years after my move, it was still barely touched and he would tease me about it. But he is a coffee freak and, after we moved in together, it at least started making a light dent. We have moved twice together since then and STILL had those coffee filters when we moved into our current home.
Unbeknownst to me, he joked to his BFF years ago that he loved me so much our relationship would last as long as those coffee filters. Also unbeknownst to me, we apparently used the second to the last one a few months before our wedding, but my H refused to use the last one and he saved it. That same BFF, also our BM, stole it out of our house and had it framed for our wedding present, LMAO. The BM told the story before he gave it to us and that was the first time I heard it!
