Gift cards for stocks

I just read this article about buying gift cards redeemable for stocks.  Very interesting.  I can see it having popularity now that the savings bond as an investment type present is nearly non-existent.  And picking up some stocks while you are grocery shopping sounds super easy and convenient.
What do you think?  Would you buy these gift cards?

Re: Gift cards for stocks

  • Huh, that's interesting. My first question at seeing the headline was how they'd price the cards since some shares run in the multi-hundreds of dollars but it makes sense they are selling them as fractional shares. I don't know if I would buy it myself...but I can see it being a fun way for say a parent or an adult to get a child interested in learning more about the stock market.
  • Hrm.  I find it interesting, but you'd have to open an account at their brokerage, which would annoy me if I already had a brokerage that I was using and had done all the research on.  Then again, nobody I know would buy me one of these anyway.
