please indulge me for a moment. If you had a trip to Disney planned for next week, leaving on Friday and coming back next Saturday, would you go or cancel? This isn't my trip, but a friend's who can't decide if she should try to change her flight to tomorrow or hope to get there on Friday (I think she has a snowball's chance in hell of catching a flight to FL on Friday).
Re: NMMR - travel related
Even if Disney isn't "hit" it will be rainy, windy and a lot of rides will be shut down, the pools will be closed and they will be camped out in a hotel room hoping they don't lose power.
Hopefully she has insurance that will refund anything she can't cancel penalty free.
Even without a direct hit to Orlando, the rain bands from hurricanes are crazy. We get them in B'ham, 4 hours north of the Gulf whenever a hurricane hits the northern Florida Gulf coast. We even used to get them in north Georgia occasionally, a full 7 hours from the Florida border. The rain moves very fast.
Another thing to consider is the evacuation. A lot of Florida's interstate and highway system becomes one-way for evacuations, so you can only go inland and then north.
If she doesn't have dedicated trip insurance, tell her to check the credit card she used and call to see if she can get a refund from her card.
Even if I couldn't get a refund I wouldn't go. Florida is really flat and prone to floods. Chalk it up to a lesson learned and next time buy trip insurance.
The reason that vacation packages to Florida and the Caribbean are cheaper in the late summer/early fall is because of hurricane season. When you don't have a hurricane happening, it's a great time to visit because school is in session and the weather is nice.
But I mean, yeah. If you book a trip to that part of the world during hurricane season, you should buy insurance. Or make sure to have a travel card with excellent trip delay/cancellation perks.

If I were her, I'd call the airlines and see if I could cancel my flight, but at least be able to get a credit for what I'd paid that could be used another time. There might be like a $75 change fee, but better than a miserable and rainy vacation. She should still be able to cancel her hotel. Most hotels can be cancelled 24 hours ahead of time. Even if they don't have that policy, during these kind of circumstances, they usually allow people to back out with no charges.
@hoffse mentioned evacuations. There is nothing fun about them. Airports shut down. So she can't fly back out. Does she have a rental car? Then she could drive out. That's a fun 20-hour day sitting in stopped traffic. And who knows how far she would have to drive before she could find a motel that isn't already filled with other evacuees. She could also find a shelter, those would be closer and free. However, I've never stayed in one because it sounds really unpleasant to sleep in an open gym or church filled with strangers.
If she doesn't have a rental car, I think FL is pretty good with having buses available to get people out. But now you're in stopped traffic on a bus. And that bus is definitely going to a shelter.
Your friend is nuts.
Her flight is 100% getting cancelled.
She needs to cut her losses.
EDIT: Also, widespread power outage throughout Orlando and the possibility of tornadoes. Hell no.
But I'm with you and don't get the hype of Disney.
