NMMR - travel related

please indulge me for a moment. If you had a trip to Disney planned for next week, leaving on Friday and coming back next Saturday, would you go or cancel?  This isn't my trip, but a friend's who can't decide if she should try to change her flight to tomorrow or hope to get there on Friday (I think she has a snowball's chance in hell of catching a flight to FL on Friday).

Re: NMMR - travel related

  • If she can re-coup her expenses I would.

Even if Disney isn't "hit" it will be rainy, windy and a lot of rides will be shut down, the pools will be closed and they will be camped out in a hotel room hoping they don't lose power.

Hopefully she has insurance that will refund anything she can't cancel penalty free.

  • Ugh. If I could get my money back, use trip insurance, etc., I'd probably cancel. I might take a loss and try to get there later next week if I couldn't get a full refund.
  • If I could get a refund, I'd definitely cancel. I was in Florida for a hurricane and never thought about how much rain follows a hurricane.  It rained for an entire week after the hurricane.  It would be miserable to spend the week at Disney in the rain.
  • +1 to cancel.  She would be crazy to go, and it wouldn't surprise me if her flight cancelled on her anyway.

Even without a direct hit to Orlando, the rain bands from hurricanes are crazy.  We get them in B'ham, 4 hours north of the Gulf whenever a hurricane hits the northern Florida Gulf coast.  We even used to get them in north Georgia occasionally, a full 7 hours from the Florida border.  The rain moves very fast.

Another thing to consider is the evacuation.  A lot of Florida's interstate and highway system becomes one-way for evacuations, so you can only go inland and then north.

If she doesn't have dedicated trip insurance, tell her to check the credit card she used and call to see if she can get a refund from her card.

Even if I couldn't get a refund I wouldn't go.  Florida is really flat and prone to floods.  Chalk it up to a lesson learned and next time buy trip insurance.

  • Disney and Southwest have policies that allow you to change travel plans for no additional fee when there are severe weather issues. I wish she'd listen.
  • Also, I hate to point out the obvious, but for any lurkers out there....

The reason that vacation packages to Florida and the Caribbean are cheaper in the late summer/early fall is because of hurricane season.  When you don't have a hurricane happening, it's a great time to visit because school is in session and the weather is nice.

But I mean, yeah.  If you book a trip to that part of the world during hurricane season, you should buy insurance.  Or make sure to have a travel card with excellent trip delay/cancellation perks.

  • In my world, taking your kid to Disney is some kind of weird pressure. People spend an inordinate amount of time securing fast passes and meal reservations. Buy Disney shirts to wear while there (with your kid's name on it of course). Plan elaborate 'reveals' to surprise the kids, etc. I don't get any of it.  Because of this my friend has said they are not cancelling their trip. I'm totally shaking my head.

All of that is worth the risk of having a miserable time because of bad weather and closed attractions?  Makes zero sense to me, especially since Disney and Southwest will allow her to reschedule due to the storm.  They may (but maybe not) be able to reschedule the fast passes and dining reservations, but even if they can't the kids probably won't know the difference.

  • If I were her, I'd call the airlines and see if I could cancel my flight, but at least be able to get a credit for what I'd paid that could be used another time.  There might be like a $75 change fee, but better than a miserable and rainy vacation.  She should still be able to cancel her hotel.  Most hotels can be cancelled 24 hours ahead of time.  Even if they don't have that policy, during these kind of circumstances, they usually allow people to back out with no charges.

@hoffse mentioned evacuations.  There is nothing fun about them.  Airports shut down.  So she can't fly back out.  Does she have a rental car?  Then she could drive out.  That's a fun 20-hour day sitting in stopped traffic.  And who knows how far she would have to drive before she could find a motel that isn't already filled with other evacuees.  She could also find a shelter, those would be closer and free.  However, I've never stayed in one because it sounds really unpleasant to sleep in an open gym or church filled with strangers.

If she doesn't have a rental car, I think FL is pretty good with having buses available to get people out.  But now you're in stopped traffic on a bus.  And that bus is definitely going to a shelter.

  • When I looked this morning, Orlando is supposed to get 5-7 inches of rain and winds of at least 60mph. But I think they will be spared the super strong winds. Still doesn't sound fun.

I wouldn't want to be riding Thunder Mountain in pouring rain and 60 mph winds (that is if the rides aren't shut down by that point).

    Your friend is nuts.

This. Big time. Not to mention trying to have a fun vacation amidst a state where many people are just hoping that their homes and family members are safe.

OK I just read a report saying that winds are going to be 75+ MPH in Orlando by Friday.

Her flight is 100% getting cancelled.

She needs to cut her losses.

EDIT:  Also, widespread power outage throughout Orlando and the possibility of tornadoes.  Hell no.

  • Um, she's not being very smart.  Disney is not greater than the safety of her and her family.  Why would you go into a hurricane zone while others are evacuating?  All because of "the look on your kids' faces when...."

But I'm with you and don't get the hype of Disney.

  • this is exactly the type of situation that makes it better to surprise the kids the morning you're leaving - that way they don't get disappointed if you cancel since they never knew!
  • They're leaving Saturday now. Hope it works out for them.
  • Yeah I just saw it posted that parks are closing at 5pm today and are closed tomorrow.

Are they still planning on leaving tomorrow?

Just curious.  SWA posted an alert saying that people should expect disrupted service until next Tuesday...
