Happy Columbus Day!

So who's working today and who has the day off?

Re: Happy Columbus Day!

  • H and I are both working today...such a bummer!!

  • Ha!  I didn't even know today was a holiday until this post.

  • We're both working. :(

Does anyone live in an area where they recognize this day as Native American Day instead? I grew up mostly on the East Coast but went to college in the Midwest and that was the first time I had ever heard of it as a replacement for Columbus Day.
  • We're both working, and the first payment on our new car is due today. Last week, H started the process to get our bank account setup on the payment site, which needed to go through verification that took until the weekend. Then on Friday evening, H went to pay the car bill and was notified that because today is a bank holiday, the payment won't be processed/posted until tomorrow, 10/11. So our first payment on this car is considered late :( We're angry so I'll be calling tomorrow to sort this out.
  • I'm at work. H is a banker so he's off today. It's not fun getting ready for work when your SO is still sleeping in bed with the dog.

@labro I vaguely recall hearing about the day being recognized at Native American Day. I've lived in NY my entire life so it's always been Columbus day but I think it was a few years ago I heard it called Native American Day by some.
  • I'm working today. DH (teacher) and the girls are at the dentist now and then they're going to stop by for a visit. DH gets Tuesday and Wednesday off too- lucky guy!

This brought back a bad memory.  There was a tropical storm that hit my area about 5-6 years ago.  No evacuations, at least in our area, but power was out for a week.  And the bank who held my car loan at the time was closed that entire time also.  My car payment was due during this week.  I went in the second day they were re-opened to pay it.

They still charged me a $25 late fee.  I fought them on it and they were just "it doesn't matter we were closed, it was late, we won't do anything".  Talk about a bunch of callous jerks.  Especially for a local credit union.

I hope they enjoyed their 25 bucks.  I went with a different bank for my next car loan, just because I was so incensed about that incident.  It wasn't even the money, it was the turning their backs on their customers during a state of emergency.

@smetter04, hopefully your experience is substantially better than mine was.  I suspect it will be.  Most banks aren't utterly ridiculous like that when what a customer is asking for is not unreasonable.

  • Bank holiday!!  I'm at home, but I'm working on a project today. It may actually be easier for me if I were doing it at the office, but at least I can do it in my sweats this way ; )

@short+sassy thanks, I hope our experience is better, too! H's previous car loan (the one we paid off early, just this year) was through the same bank so I'm hoping that they'll see we have a record of on-time payments. I'm mostly annoyed that they scheduled the due date for a holiday, when they knew they'd be closed. Ridiculous.
  • Working.

I hate working these holidays because everyone thinks we're closed, so it's usually pretty slow.  So far that trend has continued.

  • working - a full patient schedule but a little different than normal since some of my after work patients are coming in earlier than usual.  my husband works all holidays (xmas, thanksgiving etc) and gets paid for some of the monday holidays, but not today.
  • I'm working today...  I can't really complain because we follow the client's holiday schedule and they give us almost a full week off at Christmas and an extra day off at 4th of July and Thanksgiving.

  • I thought more people would be working today. I decided to do a fast Costco run for a late lunch and the place was CRAWLING! I couldn't believe it. Guess more people get to recognize the holiday than I thought. Or maybe it's just the kids are out of school today.
  • nope my kid has school

Yeah, on my way to work traffic was worse than usual.  And I saw school buses.  Those stupid things are always like moths to my flame.
  • Should be working but I'm home sick.  My next holiday is Veteran's Day.

  • I had the day off, but my wife has to work every holiday there is except Christmas and Easter.  So that means I'm home alone with the kid who right now is being a fussy little toddler since he pretty much skipped his nap thanks to the school bus that drips kids off right in front of our house.

My H had quite a few people out today in his office but only because several coworkers are originally from Canada so they took a long weekend for Thanksgiving.  H's employer gives them 1 or 2 floating holidays on top of their regular (regional) holidays since they are a worldwide company and have such a diverse team and so many locations.  It seems to work well for everyone.
