Re: What's on the menu? October 10, 2016

  • Monday: couscous & sauteed veggies that we didn't have last week.

The rest of the week is up in the air. We have some frozen pork chops that we could use but we've had a lot of pork lately, so idk.

We also have a frozen turkey breast to use - does anyone have a good crockpot turkey breast recipe they wouldn't mind sharing?
  • Monday - slow cooker pumpkin chili if H remembered to make it. I haven't texted to ask because I'm worried about the answer.

Tuesday - Leftover pumpkin chili (hopefully!)

Wednesday - H and I are going to a spin class with his mom at 6 so we'll probably grab something already prepared from Wegmans

    Thursday - Taco night

    Friday - homemade pizzas

Saturday - we're going to the "grand opening" of a BBQ joint near our house - they've been open all summer but they're having a big party this weekend. I can't wait to eat delicious pulled pork and their smoked mac & cheese.

Sunday - Something in the crockpot, not sure what yet.
  • @smetter04 How about adapting a turkey pumpkin chili recipe? You could follow a typical recipe and instead of ground turkey toss in the breast and cook on low for at least 8 hours. Then before serving you can remove the breast, shred it, and then stir it back in to the chili.
  • Sunday - had leftover cabbage soup
Monday - butternut squash and kale lasagna with garden salad
Tuesday - white chicken chilli in the crockpot
Wednesday - crockpot teriyaki chicken with rice and brocolli
Thursday - beet pesto, kale, mozzarella, goat cheese pizza
    Friday - leftovers
Saturday - cookup any left over veggies from the week and eat with salmon

  • Well tonight I'm in Nashville, so I'm thinking of picking up either Bread & Co or SATCo for the memories.

Then I am projecting cereal for the rest of the week until Friday when we will have pizza.

I eat from the bottom of the food pyramid.

  • Tonight: We're trying Blue Apron this week (for "fun" reasons not financial savings) so we're making avocado tortas that came with the box.

Tomorrow: Chicken Blue Apron meal for H, leftover eggplant curry and rice for me.

Wednesday: Out with a friend who's in town for a conference.

    Thursday: Make-at-home pizza.

Friday: Probably a vegetable stir fry or fried rice

Saturday: Probably black bean burritos, but could vary depending on what veggies we get at the CSA Wednesday

How was blue apron?  I want to try it this winter (also for "fun" reasons) after my CSA is over but all the reviews I see for it are sponsored blogs.

It's really fun! I feel guilty about it because it is not MM at all, but the recipes are delicious and in two nights we've already learned some new cooking skills. The packaging waste bugs me, but it's mostly recyclable and I do like that it minimizes food waste by giving you exactly what you need. We've cooked the recipes together which is fun, and it does decrease grocery spending. We've decided to keep it going every other week, max, for a bit, but to be a bit choosy about the recipes when deciding whether to do a given week. I feel best about the value when we can get a good seafood entree in the mix. I love seafood, but it's so expensive that I rarely buy it and when I do I'm so nervous about messing it up.

I definetely think I will try it.  probably in January.  Our summer CSA ends in late october or early november (when the food runs out basically), then I have a big delivery in november and one in december.  So once I stop having vegetables coming out of my ears, I would love to try it, mostly because I feel like it would be a fun "date night"cooking thing

This is good to know!  We have a coupon to try it at a pretty good discount and I've been debating.

  • H started with a coupon too-he did the first order while I was away at a training for three weeks. I have one big tip for those of you that try it. You can cancel or skip a week online at any time, but the deadline to do so is about a full week before your next delivery. For us, that meant that H had not even had a chance to cook his first meal before cancelling/delaying the next week. He missed the deadline by about half an hour, and to their credit, the BA customer service people did make an exception for us since we were going to be away on delivery day. Now, I just have which weeks we want to skip set up pretty far in advance.
  • Tonight I made apple stuffed chicken with a side of broccoli
  • For those that enjoy Blue Apron or are thinking about trying it, H and I also love Home Chef. Same price but there are more recipes each week to choose from. I'm a semi-picky eater so there's usually one meal a week from Blue Apron that I don't totally love. Home Chef has about 9 recipes each week to choose from so I'm guaranteed to get three that we both like.
  • I think we tried BA, Home Chef and Plated all on coupons. I thought they were all pretty good, Home Chef was maybe the best of the three and I liked the greater flexibility with recipes.

End of the day I thought it was spendy as a regular thing but it seemed like definitely a fun thing to try out every once in awhile.
