Capital One Venture and Chase Freedom Unlimited WWMMD?
I got a Capital One card several years ago because of the 0% foreign transaction fee. It earned 1% and I only used it for foreign purchases. I have had a Discover card forever and used to use that as my primary. H and I have a Chase Freedom together under his name but that is out of scope because I am only talking about my personal card for "fun money" spending.
A year an a half ago I closed the Capital One card and opened the COne Venture for the sign up bonus and the 1.5% cash back. I switched this to my primary personal card and moved the Discover to be used only for advantageous 5% cashback category purchases.
This week I had fraud on my Venture card. Apparently someone logged in and ordered a new card and changed the address to one in another state so the card would be sent there. I found out and stopped it but the customer service on this issue was a little lacking. It is really scary that this happened because I have an excellent online password. I have since changed to a new excellent password.
So now I'm irked at Capital One and unhappy with the online account security (although maybe this is irrational). I see that Chase has the new 1.5% Freedom Unlimited with a $150 sign up bonus. I'm thinking about cancelling my Capital One account and replacing it with the new Chase card. The drawback is that there is a foreign transaction fee on this card. Assuming I get a Chase card I then have to decide what to do with the CO card/account. Leaving the CO account open may be good for credit scoring reasons and leaving me with a good foex card but closing the account would help with peace of mind, one less account and password to monitor and also give me the opportunity to reopen (with a new bonus?) down the road if I want to.
FYI my FICO score is over 800 and my annual credit card spending is about $1,500 with most spend occurring at the end of the year (making it a good time to get that Freedom sign up bonus). My top categories (in order) are phone bill, gym and clothes.
Sometimes I take a vacation and put it on my cc, that can be up to an extra couple of thousand, however, I don't have plans at the moment for any foreign trips or vacations in 2017.
WWMMD? Get the new Chase card? Close the old Venture card? Consider a different card altogether?
Re: Capital One Venture and Chase Freedom Unlimited WWMMD?
However, I will say, I was not impressed with Capital One. I have an online savings account there once and when I tried to add my wife (foreign national with permanent resident status), they froze all the accounts and it took me almost a month to get access to my money. Not amused. It wasn't until I threatened to close the accounts and take my money elsewhere that they fixed it. I still moved my money.
I do have a Chase Freedom card and they're really on the ball. Especially when it comes to fraud protection. Even did a next day air on the new cards when I told them we were flying out to Europe on Tuesday (this was Friday).
I looked at the Unlimited card. For us it didn't work out because we hit the 5% categories on the Freedom card enough that our cash back is higher than it would be with a flat 1.5%.
If you are willing to pay the fee to have either a Sapphire preferred or Sapphire Reserve card issued through Chase, then the Freedom Unlimited makes sense because you can pool all of your points into a single UR account and transfer them to travel partners in bulk. Both Sapphire cards do not have a foreign transaction fee, and they actually award category bonus points when traveling internationally (this is rare).
