Another interview update

The interview on Monday went very well.  I received an e-mail this morning that they want to fly us down there for an in-person interview with me and then a spousal lunch with both of us.  So we're chatting about the logistics and timeline on when to get down there, but it's looking like it will be within 2 weeks.  Holy crap!

So yeah, we're a bit freaking out now.  Trying to figure out places to look at to rent while we're down there so we don't have to make another trip before moving or sign a contract on a rental sight unseen.
We're also trying to figure out all of the crap we need to get buttoned up on our house to get it ready to list since we'll put it on market soon after I accept an offer.
Obviously there's no formal offer yet, but we've discussed pay and I've seen the benefits package options.  At this point they said it's just meeting me in person to make sure everything checks out and I click and meeting the others that I'll be on the team with.

Re: Another interview update

  • Congrats!

So you have decided to accept if they make a formal offer?

  • @hoffse We're leaning toward it.  The only thing that would hang us up is if H's work gives him an offer to stay that we can't refuse.

  • Very exciting!  I'm jealous, my life is so boring right now, I want to move somewhere new just to liven it up! :)
  • wow @brij2006 that's some great news!  Sounds like a great company to work for and we all on here know you are meant for that company.  Kudos to you for doing this while you are pregnant.  Do they know you are expecting?

  • That is amazing news!!!  I'm really impressed they are flying your H down also.  That says a lot about their focus on family.

Assuming all goes well and you take an offer, it is a lot to plan and coordinate...but really exciting, too!

  • @vlagrl35 No they do not.  I was advised from a few friends who work in HR to not tell them until a formal offer is given or when I accept the offer.

Good advice! I actually had a candidate once tell me she was pregnant after we had decided to hire her but before we made the offer. My boss started to second guess whether we should offer her the position and I put my foot down that changing our mind based on her pregnancy would be illegal discrimination and he agreed with me (plus we had zero other viable candidates and I was not about to start my search from scratch). I WAS kind of mad that she put me in such an awkward spot even though she thought she was "doing the right thing".

That's exactly how I feel.  I don't want to drop this bomb on them after I accept the position, but I also know that if I were in their shoes, even though it's not supposed to make a difference, it would play into my thoughts of making an offer.
The only part that I'm leery on is that I'll be uprooting our family, work at the new job for 4 months, then be off for 3.  By my understanding FMLA does not have to cover me for my job since I will have been there for less than a year.  So that definitely scares me.
Part of me thought about telling them to table my application for 6 more months then make it active again, but I know that will just show them I'm not interested and I am very very interested.

FMLA won't cover you, but see if the state you would be moving to has a more stringent parental leave policy. For example I live in Massachusetts and in order to qualify for MMLA (which guarantees 8 weeks unpaid while holding your job for you) you only need to be a full time employee for 3 months prior to taking leave. It's not great, but it's better than nothing!
  • yeah I thought you couldn't get FMLA if you haven't been at a job for that long.  But if you guys can make it on 1 salary its possible

My leave was going to be mostly unpaid anyways, so we were planning accordingly.
