Finally upgrading to a Smartphone

I haven't posted anything in a while, although I still lurk at least once or twice a week. :)
I am one of the few people left in the world--at least, it feels like it--to have a dumbphone. I finally want to upgrade to a Smartphone, mostly because I want my Google calendar accessible on something other than my large iPad, and I feel like I've missed out on taking some cute pictures of my kids, because I didn't have my big Nikon camera with me and wished I could've just taken a picture with my phone. So we priced it out (I'm on a family plan with my in-laws), and the cost to switch from our current family plan to a shared plan with data is going to be very similar. That seems crazy to me, so we're hoping there aren't a lot of hidden fees/charges that are going to hit us every month. We like our current carrier (US Cellular) and wouldn't switch to the other carrier around here (Verizon--bad past experiences with them).

Anyway, my MIL and I are going Saturday or Sunday to switch the plan and pick out Smartphones. I've been reading up on quite a few phones, and I just don't know what to think. Do I shell out $600-700 for one of the higher-end phones, or do I just get one of the cheaper versions for $130-250? I have an iPad, and I've just never loved Apple, so I'm excited to get an Android phone. I'm a little worried about the Samsung batteries, although I'm really leaning toward the Galaxy S7 if I go higher-end.

If you would, share the type of phone you have, what features you like/dislike about it, if you're happy with it, if you'd go a different route next time, etc. Also, is there anything else I should be considering about a Smartphone?

Thank you!!

Re: Finally upgrading to a Smartphone

  • All of my smart phones have been Apple, so I can't speak to the droids.  I would caution you about getting the cheapest model just because it is "cheap".  As newer models are released the features improve (better battery life, better cameras, more storage, etc.).  You don't have to get the latest & greatest, but you probably shouldn't go super cheap either.

That being said, I've been able to get some great pictures on my iPhone.  One benefit is that going with an iPhone you can sync all of your apps and data between your phone and iPad so you can pick up either device and get the latest text, email, facebook notifications and everything else.

I also have a Mac computer which I don't love at all.  I've had it for about 2 years and HATE the file structure and trying to find files after they have been saved.  I'm seriously debating selling this one and going back to a PC after I've done some research on the latest Windows version.  Windows 8 was horrible which is why I bought a Mac versus a new PC.  Anyway, this is just to tell you that while I hate my Mac laptop I love my iPhone and iPad mini.

  • we have all apple products so I've only ever had the iphone.  Never had any issues with it.  I just love how I can sync all my apple products - makes life easier.

  • I've got a Galaxy S5 that I bought a couple years ago.  I like the fact for the most part that they keep up with their software updates a lot of the other phones don't keep up with them or stop as soon as the new models come out.  I don't like that AT&T forces them on you though, but that has nothing to do with the Galaxy.

Didn't get the S6 at the time because the phone was a sealed unit, so no way to add a SD card or replace the battery.  May or may not be important to some people.  Not sure if the S7 has reversed that or not.

I've not used US Cellular, but will they let you do payments on the phone?  I know AT&T/Verizon/T-Mobile will let you do their Next/Edge plan where they break the payments up interest free over 2-3 years.  You could also buy one model older (get the S6 instead of the S7) for instance, that'll bring the costs down some without sacrificing quality.

As far as I can tell, only the Note 7 was affected by the battery issues.  Seems to be something specific to the phone.  Last I heard they were completely scrapping the phone, but do your own research as I've only been loosely following the issue since I'm not in the market for a new phone.

  • Don't knock the dumb phones, I have one myself lol. I have a computer at work and IPAD/laptop at home so I really don't need one. Everyone around me has them in case I need for something important. It's nice to have a cheaper phone bill between H's data phone and my cheapy one.

I ditched apple long ago and love android phones BUT in my experience a $700 phone lasts just about as long as a $200 phone so you're paying for a few extra features and mostly brand name. If you go a model or two back (like the Samsung 5 or 6 instead of the 7) you will still get a great phone but at a heavily discounted price since it isn't the "latest and greatest". So much of smartphones is stupid marketing - my MIL MUST have the newest iPhone and she convinced my dad to go iPhone too when he finally upgraded (despite me and DH trying to teach him he doesn't need one). I love them dearly, but they are dinosaurs when it comes to technology and for the features they use would have been just as well served with a low end Android phone.

ETA: you can have all of your devices sync with Android too. It's always a big selling point for Apple products, but my work computer, home computer, and phone all sync seamlessly. I also find the location based reminders from Google to be LIFE CHANGING, and last I checked (probably 1-2 years ago) Apple didn't offer those.
  • I just moved from flip phone to smartphone a few months ago.  I am on verizon and got the Droid mini by Motorola.  It was basically free with a 2 year plan and I was like "free is for me."
The battery is already getting weak.  I can't get through some days now without charging it, but from what I hear batteries on smartphones in general usually get weak.
I love the size of it (same as H's iphone 5).  It fits in my pocket.  Pictures are also very easy to take.  I think droid has a thing where you can tap your phone with another droid and transfer pictures.  I've never tried it but it sounds neat.

Rumor is (according to H) that they are going to introduce a smart flip phone.  I like that idea because I have had some butt dialing problems and that would cut down on scratching.

It is nice having my google calendar, email and apps like Cartwheel easily accessible.
  • @csauve you can buy external battery packs to keep in your bag if you find you can't get through the day on a full battery. They are varying sizes, but I have one that's about the size of a pack of gum that will fully charge 2 smartphones before it needs to be recharge. It's a nice emergency back up and I think only cost about $30.

That is a great idea!  I will add that to my Christmas list.  I think I actually got one of those at work a few years ago and gave it to H since I had a dumb phone.  He uses it all the time since his iphone 5 battery is worse than mine.
  • H and I both tried android phones when we started our respective practices, and both of us ended up switching to iPhones at the soonest possible moment.  We have no complaints.

I currently have the 6s.  I have had it since last January, and no complaints.  Battery life is fine, and I haven't noticed it diminishing.

We use ours heavily for work, though.  They are undoubtedly the most important devices either of us owns for our jobs.  I have turned my phone off less than 10 times in the last year.

Android just could not keep up with our business use.  I don't know if it's the platform our firms use or what (they both use the same platform), but my life got significantly better when I switched to Apple, and I will likely never try switching back as long as I am at my current firm.   My H had the same experience.

The camera on the iPhone is really good.  It's good enough to replace pretty much any non-DSLR camera.  The camera is also good enough for mobile deposit to be seamless at every bank we have tried.  Again, both of our previous android phones had sh*tty cameras, and mobile deposit never worked.  It's been a few years since I switched to Apple, so I'm sure the cameras are better now, but it was incredibly frustrating.

Like PP says it syncs with other apple products seamlessly, not just ipad but the watches, etc. too.  Applepay is widely accepted and secure.

After the note 7 debacle I will probably have some trouble trusting Samsung for a little while.

  • I have an iphone 5 and it works just fine for me.  The photo storage is a bit lacking, so I have to delete some pics and do transfers to the cloud (although I'm not sure I'm doing it right)  H has a 6 and the main difference I can tell is the camera on his is better... especially for stuff like landscape/sunset pictures.

I do like that you can set up all your devices to sync together, H has his all set up with his macbook and the AppleTV and the ipad.  I'm still on a separate plan so I don't sync up, but we could.
  • Personally, I think the biggest thing is to see what most of your friends/associates use.  My wife has an iphone, but so do most of her friends/family.  I have an Android phone, but my friends are mixed.  But most of my reasons are something the average consumer doesn't even think about.

  • I switched to a smart phone about two years ago.  I hear ya, I felt like the last person on earth also, lol.  I'm with Metro PCS and got a phone that was somewhere around $120-$150.  It's a Samsung, but I don't know what kind.

The battery life isn't great and gets chewed up quick with internet usage.  But, it's been fine for me.  One hour of internet usage chews up the battery by roughly 30-40%, but I generally don't use the phone for that other than to pull up "this or that" for a few minutes.

The camera is decent.  I have a p/t job that requires me to take photos of hotel event boards.  As in, pics of words that are sometimes blurry anyway.  It does a fine job of even that kind of specificity.

Personally, I think most "high end" phones are a waste of money.  Especially if they are the "newest" version.  They're very expensive and most people just don't need the fancier functions.  Of course, that is coming from a person who has never owned one!  Perhaps I don't know what I am missing, but I doubt it.

I don't see the point in having "this years" phone if you can wait for it to be "last years" phone.  Although, I sometimes feel like Apple will drag you kicking and screaming whether you want to go or not.  But even there you can be a generation or two behind and be ok.

  • We just got the iphone 7 for an early x-mas gift. We had the 5s but they kept running out of space.. figured it was best to upgrade while our phones were still working and not when it's an emergency. Happy with them so far, but we have a macbook, ipad at home so everything integrates nicely.

It's funny you say that.  My wife used to have a iphone 5.  When we switched to AT&T, I got her the 128GB iphone 6Plus.  She swore she'd never use that much space.  Yup, she filled it.....

  • Have fun! One thing I think is SO important regardless of what phone you buy, is getting the best screen cover and case you can afford. It doesn't take much to crack a screen and those phones are so costly to replace. Don't skimp on them, even if it takes away from the "cool" look of your phone.
  • I also find the location based reminders from Google to be LIFE CHANGING, and last I checked (probably 1-2 years ago) Apple didn't offer those.
@LillibetteV, what are location based reminders from Google??
  • I ended up getting the Samsung Galaxy S7. It was expensive, and unfortunately, I didn't qualify for the "up to half-off Smartphone" deal they had going on, because you had to trade in your current smartphone (and apparently my dumbphone didn't count), but I did get $100 off. I wanted a really good camera, and it is really good. I'm still looking for a good case, although I have the glass screen protector, which seems nice so far. I am scared to drop it; it seems so fragile compared to my old phone which was plastic and cheap, and I really kinda wanted it to break so I could get a new phone! Any tips of favorite cases? I'm more concerned with it being durable than slim.

Since our new data plan is the same, if not slightly ($10-20) cheaper than our current plan, I don't feel too bad about the price of the Smartphone. I think I'll get my use out of it, and it's close to Christmas, so I'll call it my Christmas gift. You're welcome, DH, you don't have to buy me anything! :)
  • Otterbox Defender series.  We use it on all our phones.  You phone will even survive a trip down the driveway.  Don't ask how I know this.....

  • @takmjs they are the best thing ever for people with too much on their brains! You can set locations on your google account such as home, work, mom's house, whatever. And then you can set the reminder so that the alert pops up on your phone when you get there! For example I used to set a reminder to throw in laundry at 630pm assuming I'd be home by then - but then I'd get stuck at work, or there would be traffic, and the alert would go off sooner than I really needed it and I would dismiss it and then forget to do my task. Now I just say "ok Google, remind me to do laundry when I get home" and it will pop up the alert based on my GPS location rather than a set time so I don't have to guess when I'll get home. I use it all the time for home and for work.
  • I have some off brand cover called Totu that I got for cheap on Amazon. I've dropped my phone several times while using it and it's been perfect. Otterboxes really are wonderful...but I do think there are cheaper options on the market that provide similar performance if you don't want to shell out the money. I think I got tired of the extreme bulk of the Otterbox I had for a phone I had several years ago and I like this slimmer one much more since I can fit my phone in my pocket more easily.

I know you already picked out your phone...  I've had three Notes  over the years.  LOVED them.  H and I were getting ready to upgrade the Note 7 when he broke his phone.  Well he couldn't really go without a phone and he was looking at Verizon.  Some how he managed to talk me into the Moto Z Force Droid.  They had a great deal when they first came out so we both got the same one.  I do like the mods - I opted to get the extra battery mod with a cute Kate Spade design.  My cell never dies!  Also features a shatterproof screen.  H thought about getting me the camera mod since we really use our phones to take pictures of the kids (soccer, school, park, etc) more than I remember to grab our nice camera.
