Franchises

Out of curiosity has anyone every thought about buying a franchise business?  If you did which business did you consider and why?
H and I looked into this on a very limited basis when he lost his job and there were a lot of opportunities.  We joke around a bit about how we should open a Taco Bell since we live near 3 universities and there isn't one in the area.

Re: Franchises

  • Have never considered it, but if I did I'd put in a Chipotle. That place is always packed.
  • I briefly looked into a couple, but they required far more liquid assets than I keep around....

I'd go for Dunkin' Donuts. In Boston we have one on every street corner and the market somehow still isn't saturated! It's the closest thing I can think of to a zero risk investment lol.
  • chick fil a - 10/10 times.

  • There's no way I'd ever have any desire to own a restaurant franchise. I am digging the regionality of the previous posters pics!

  • My friend was just telling me about a co-worker of his who was a CPA and working with him at a pretty popular accounting firm and one day he just put in his two weeks. When they asked him where he was going to work he said he was leaving to become a manager at Chick Fil A. They were very confused until the guy explained that Chick Fil A does not just hand out franchise rights and you have to take their extensive training class OR work your way up the ranks in order to open a franchise.

This guy took a step "down" in order to meet his future goal of owning a Chick Fil A.  Pretty interesting!
  • I have heard that Chick Fil A has a unique franchising model.

Without having done much research I'm thinking services based companies have some good growth potential.  We started using camp bow wow for our dog boarding, grooming and occasional daycare and have been to 3 different locations.  We like them and know there will be a degree of consistency at their locations.

We LOVE Camp Bow Wow!  I wish there was one where we live now. They're a head and shoulders above every other doggie daycare we've used.
  • Yeah chick fil a is extremely conservative with their franchising.  The result is their restaurants are ultra successful.  Even growing up in the land of chick fil a I have never seen one fail.

B'ham has 4 that I can think of - the fourth just opened in the last year - and they are all packed.

Nashville could be a chick fil a mecca if somebody would get it together and open one in the downtown/Vanderbilt area.  I can only think of 3 chick fil as in the nashville area, and they are all a fair distance from downtown.

That's the one thing I've never understood.  We have a couple here and around meal times, they're packed.  Lines wrapping around the building.  I'm just not that patient no matter how good the food is.

I've thought about D&D before but wouldn't do anything about it! Big hit here!

That sounds like a huge opportunity right there!  No Taco Bells within the area of 3 universities.  That's just wrong, lol.

I don't know if you're just focused on franchises, but there are always local businesses for sale also.  It's possibly a cheaper, easier way to get started, as long as it is already a successful business.  I think there's a section on Craig's List for that and I'm sure there are brokers/real estate agents who focus on just business sales.
