Old Hickory Sheds...

Anyone familiar?

DH and I go Saturday to meet with the local dealer to discuss designing and buying one of these. It will likely cost $10k+ due to what we want and size.

Does anybody here have any feedback on the company and their quality? Or questions to ask going in?

No feedback on a new one, but an old hickory shed is common to find around here. Meaning, they're 50+ years old and made out of hickory.

What's the purpose of the building and what size are you wanting to build? We built a small shed in our backyard a little over a year ago for $3k. It's 10x14.

My dad always builds his own sheds. No idea what he's paid for them, but I've always found that you tend to pay a premium for someone else to do it, even if it's a shed kit from one of the stores.

My dad built a playhouse for me years ago that my mom now uses as a potting shed. It has a foundation, porch, roof and siding that matches the real house, dutch doors, etc. I think he paid a few hundred bucks for the materials and built the whole thing in a weekend. This was many years ago, but PP is right that if you can do it yourself it's going to cost way less.

Third? Fourth? Building it yourself if you can. Materials plus some basic tools (miter box if you don't have a miter saw, hammer, battery powered screwdriver) should cost far less than having someone build it for you. Of course, I don't know what scale you're thinking...but generally MOST sheds can be completed over a few days with one or two people working on it. There's actually a ton of great free plans online that go into detail on all the materials you need plus instructions for building your own shed.

Hi. It's 40' in length with windows, a garage door, loft, shelves, workbenches, porch, barn door and two other doors. We don't have the time for it for DH to do it himself. Old Hickory makes them to specifications and then delivers it pre made and does all the ground work. It's our "rural outbuilding." One end will be my garden shed. The loft will be storage and the rest is spots for trailer, mower and large items like our canoe.

@MommyLiberty5013 - that sounds amazing! DH and I are talking about a tiny(ish) house for retirement. That sounds just about perfect- esp with a porch!

That sounds about right for the price, and if it's pre-fab and they do the work, worth it to me.

Sounds more like a garage than a shed. Not sure how much of a reference this is, but I was quoted $8000 once to have a one bay garage converted to a 2 bay. That was "dried in" with no drywall, insulation, etc. Just weatherproofed essentially.

Yes they are darling. Pretty nice options with lifetime warranty and wind/snow loads. But they are sheds so for a home you'd have to do your own electrical and insulation and drywall, etc..

They could easily be turned into tiny homes though! Check them out!

We met with the rep yesterday. He mentioned people buying these for tiny homes. He said all the specs are the same as a houses, so they are super easy to outfit with electricity. Also we walked through a handful he has on the lot. They are made by the Mennonites, and the quality of construction is superb - a lot of care and attention to detail.

I think $10,000 for a 40' long "fancy" shed is a reasonable price.

I am not familiar with Old Hickory sheds. Though what you are planning sounds awesome, @MommyLiberty5013. And, considering the size and features you all want, $10K sounds like a good price to me.

On the subject of sheds, for your more typical backyard shed, I highly recommend Arrow. They are good quality and very low cost. They are metal sheds, instead of the hard plastic sheds you see at the big stores. I bought two of them for our backyard, one for us and one of our tenants, and they were about $600 each. Which included the shipping. The model I got is 9'x10'. It was even cheaper than trying to build the sheds ourselves.
