Roth IRA and MAGI

Thought I would share in case this benefits anyone.

I was worried about if we would be phased out of Roth IRA contributions this year because I had an unusually high bonus.  I was also unsure how our side hustles would contribute to our total income.

We were planning to start the backdoor method if needed but we just got our taxes done and our accountant confirmed that we are definitely eligible for 2016 because of what our MAGI is.  I feel so dim that I wasn't thinking of MAGI and was instead thinking of gross income.  We take deductions and H started a new job halfway through last year that offered a 401K.  We maxed that out resulting in a really low take home paycheck for H and also helping the MAGI.

edited to say MAGI not AGI

Re: Roth IRA and MAGI

  • Just to be clear, AGI for determining Roth IRA eligibility is actually Modified AGI, and does not allow for many deductions.  Pre-tax deductions like 401(k) and HSA accounts, yes, but things like the itemized deductions/standard deduction, student loan interest, IRA contribution deductions, tuition deductions, etc. are not part of MAGI.
  • Thanks @KAdams767 I actually just noticed my MAGI/AGI error and edited the OP.

Hah, I definitely thought it was based on AGI as well, I guess my eyes glazed over the "modified" part on the IRS website. Anyway, I thought we were in the same boat this year (or that we'd be in the range of not being allowed to make a full contribution) as well but luckily came in under the threshold.

Ha, no worries.  I just wanted to point it out to avoid confusion, because the IRS doesn't really make it easy to just mentally figure out if you still qualify or not, the way they structure the MAGI worksheet to "add" deductions back in and all.  I am "unfortunate" enough to no longer qualify, but when I was near the cutoff, I found the calculation to be annoying.
  • I know I could look this up, but what is the max MAGI for doing this?  We need to start finding some more tax deductions with H's new salary/bonus structure, but I worry we'll be over the limits for most of the common ones.
  • @julieanne912 For a couple in 2016, phase out is from $184K-194K (range increases by $2K for 2017).  The $36K from 401K + $6,750 HSA are what can contribute to getting the MAGI under this range for most people.  From what I understand H and I could have grossed around $226K and with the 401K + HSA adjustment still come in under the phase out.
  • Thanks @csuave, that's helpful.  I think we'll be dangerously close, and probably over if he gets full bonuses each quarter.  If that happens our gross income before any kind of taxes or deductions will be $254,000, assuming no raises or bonuses on my end, which usually come in December.    We might skim by for 2017 because his new pay didn't take effect until last week, but 2018 could be brutal.  Hopefully by then we'll have a child deduction to help.

Good to know the amounts- given that we'll both max out 401k/403b I don't think we'll have to worry about hitting that total for a long time (probably 7+ years given my prior raises and DH's contracted salaries with the teacher's union).    :/
