Monday Accountability

1.  How MM was your weekend?

2.  Any progress toward goals?

3.  In honor of Earth Day do you have a green tip to share?

Re: Monday Accountability

  • 1. It was a low spend weekend which was good since Easter weekend was spendy.  We did fun free stuff Friday and Sunday.  Saturday $20 on a play, $21 for dinner at TGI Fridays (used a rewards coupon for a free dinner!) and $20 on groceries.  We also made some money from a BnB stay.

    2. Staying the course with goals.  I found out that my cola raise will start in a few weeks which will be a few extra bucks per pay.

    3. Wine corks can be recycled.  By me Whole Foods and Houlihan's restaurant are two places that will take them.  I collect them in a dollar store cylinder vase and then take them in when convenient.  Find our more at recork.org

    1. How MM was your weekend? Decent enough. $100 at Lowe's on some necessary materials to complete minor fixes around the house. $60 on mulch. $20 at the grocery store. $23 at the county dump to offload a bunch of broken bricks and pallets.

     2. Any progress toward goals? Well we paid off the credit card for our Norway flights and we're sending the money for the remainder of our trip so that's about it. Otherwise we're in major spending freeze mode until all this house stuff is done.

     3. In honor of Earth Day do you have a green tip to share? Keep your reusable grocery bags in your car. I don't have kids so mine live on the floor behind my seat and I just grab a few whenever I go in for a shopping trip. I love my reusable bags because they fit more groceries and they are much much easier to carry. Once I unload the groceries I just make it a habit to stick the bags straight back into my car. Also, if you have a sewing machine, grocery sacks are incredibly easy to make yourself out of old sheets or other fabric.
  • 1.  Ugh.  We've been so bad the past few weeks.  H working from home has been costing us pricy daily coffees, which then in turn makes me feel like I should be "allowed" lunch out on the family dime.  We really need to reign in this silly spending.

    2.  Yes!  H has a few months of billing now under his belt, and has his first training next month.  We allocated $5,000 this week for retirement plus 15% social security tax.  Our plan is to put all of his earnings we can into retirement accounts for him and me (I'm going to help orchestrate and facilitate his trainings) to keep as our tax liability as low as possible.  Anything after the max will go toward the mortgage.

    3.  I keep things until they're no longer functional instead of buying new stuff with all the latest bells and whistles.  If it's still works, why buy new?

  • 1. Errr....not amazing. We spent about $100 on various take-out/dinner out with friends because I was feeling superbly tired and lazy. Finally got my act together on Sunday and spent $40 at the grocery store for the week though! $75 at target on some additional supplements my midwife told me to start taking, plus a couple of extra maternity tank tops/tshirts. Spent another $45 on an insert that will turn my purse collection into a diaper (I was waiting for it to go on sale and I got 15% off!)

    2. The front steps are almost complete! I can't wait to use my front door again haha. We also ordered the carpet to redo the inside stairs and should have those done by early June.

    3. We don't do anything special or unique in the "green" department. We recycle, we utilize reusable glass containers when possible, we walk instead of drive when possible, use rags instead of paper towels at home, and I'm usually a pretty big stickler about food waste, etc.

    1.  How MM was your weekend?

Pretty good- groceries ($170), DD#2's b-day presents ($50- her big request was another baby doll and books on woolly mammoths and evolution), and returned some things to ON.

    2.  Any progress toward goals?

DH is still waiting on the transfer from old 403b provider to new 403b provider, current deductions with new provider are all set.
He submitted his paycheck change for the fall (from 26 to 22) and we'll update the 403b deductions to $900/paycheck over the summer (district only allows 20 paychecks to be eligible for 403b withdrawal).
Fed allowances are updated for both of us- from 1 to 0.
Federal taxes were paid, waiting on State return.
Added $87/month to my car payment to have it paid off by EOY 2019.

    3.  In honor of Earth Day do you have a green tip to share?

The biggest thing we're teaching the girls right now is to turn off the water when they're brushing their teeth and turn off lights when they leave rooms (they're already pros at recycling!).. small things to hopefully carry forward as they get older.

  • 1. I think just $30 on sushi. I'm very behind on my budgeting though.

    2. No-I have no paycheck this week and we're waiting for my state maternity benefits to kick in, so just treading water. We did get our dental reimbursement that will go to savings for now. We want to use some to do some long-procrastinated electric work, but we're still waiting to finalize bills from Sam's birth first, just in case.

    3. Oh man, this is my job so I could go on for ages about this stuff. I'll go with bringing your expired medications to a drop box for disposal instead of flushing them. Some common medications are starting to show up in trace amounts in both drinking and ocean water. Also, mow your lawn to 3" or higher to allow deeper root growth and higher water infiltration, which is good for the water quality of downslope lakes or streams.

We have drug take back day coming up this Saturday, April 29th.  Not sure if it is just my city or perhaps a national thing.

It may be a national thing because I just saw a sign for it in my travels around town either today or yesterday. And I don't think we're in the same city @csuave

Kind of a side question - how long did it take from submitting it to getting a check? I know our husbands both work for the same (massive) employer lol. I just sent ours the other day and we're getting almost the max back and I want it now! hahaha
  • I hate to say it @LillibetteV but it takes a long time. Usually a couple of months.

Rats. Knew I shouldn't have put off sending it in! lol
  • 1.  How MM was your weekend?

Very good!  I had a doctor's appointment on Friday.  Don't know the cost yet, but probably $200.  Got take-out lunch after it for $25, but I had a gift card for that whole amount.  That was it for the whole weekend.

    2.  Any progress toward goals?

Lots!  Since our last Monday Accountability.  I've paid down my 'cc debt by about $5K over the last month.  But it just never comes down fast enough, does it, lol?  My big goal at the moment is getting back below a 25% utilization.  It will take me about 2-3 months to get there.

    3.  In honor of Earth Day do you have a green tip to share?

I do the typical recycling though, oddly enough, my area does not have glass recycling.  But probably the biggest dent I make is always buying used cars and then drive them for years.  It takes a tremendous amount of energy and oil to manufacture a car.

  • 1. Kind of spendy. I'm planning a surprise party for H's graduation next month and it's getting to be quite expensive. I though a BBQ would be reasonable, but I invited too many people (who all said yes!) and we're dealing with a lot of allergies. So my BBQ will now have gluten free, meat free, and dairy free options.

    2. Not financially. We actually just took a chunk of cash out of our house account to get some landscaping done, but that's what we were saving for, so a goal is technically accomplished. We also hired someone to cut our grass this year. Grass cutting and yard work took an entire day for us once a week, so it's a cost I'm willing to pay to get a day back in the week. Time is valuable to us, especially since I only get one day off each week.

    3. We unfortunately don't do much beyond the normal recycling, turning lights off, unplugging items when not in use, etc. We almost completely abolished plastic water bottles from our house, though. H only buys them now to take for his guys on range days.

I know allergies are very serious and you're awesome for accommodating all of those but....what's left if you cut out gluten, meat, and dairy from a BBQ?!

We're going to have a gluten-free grill, since a lot of spices and seasonings aren't gluten free. So there's that, then the other grill will have veggie burgers and mushroom caps along with regular beef burgers and hot dogs. The sides will all have gluten free options along with a "regular" option. I ordered a cupcake cake and a dozen gluten free cupcakes to accompany it. So the BBQ isn't gluten, meat, and dairy free, there are just multiples of everything. Which isn't helping the cost. Good thing H is worth it!
  • 1. The weekend was a little spendy: we went for pedicures to sooth our tired Paris-walking feet ($60); spent $40 at Lowes on a new doorbell and a vacuum part; $100 on tickets to a play and another $120 on dinner after the play. Here's how I justified it: while in Paris, we spent cash saved for the purpose of spending on the trip.  So, we didn't touch our regular daily bank accounts for a week.  That works right? ;) We also needed to stock the fridge again and spent about $120 on groceries, but I take my lunch to work everyday and meal plan for every dinner.

    2. We paid off the apartment rental charge for Paris and add $200 back to savings.

    3. We do the regular stuff: recycling, reusable bags and water bottles, shutting off lights and water, etc.

It's definitely a national thing- my employer just sent out information yesterday on it.

Saturday, April 29, is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. This 13th annual event was started in order to safely and properly dispose of expired or unused prescription drugs that may be lingering in your bathroom cabinets.

  • 1 - we are living on a tighter budget more than normal for this time of year.  We need to replenish some savings.  I can't remember what all we spent last weekend.  I went to a yoga workshop Friday night for $20, we had dinner Saturday night for around $15, and we got some stuff at the grocery store for $16.  Menards was having a hanging basket sale so we got 4 baskets plus a couple plants for our front porch.  DH had a left over rebate from them so those flowers were free - win!

2 - I'd say this week has been pretty good for me. I think I booked 4 weddings since last Friday :)  In April alone I got 2 new violin students and as of just yesterday I got my first renter for the music room at DH's studio.  She's another violin/viola teacher but I don't feel I'm competing with her for students since I only do it part time.  She's just starting her studio back up so if I get prospective students that don't work for my schedule I'll send them to her.

3 - We do the basic things like recycle, turn off lights when not needed and turn water off when not being used.
