MM - and Bras
I have spent $100 on a single bra before. I figure I wear one everyday, it may as well be the best made contraption every built. But now, I have found some brands that are far less expensive that seem to do really well. Okay, MM what's your take on bras?
1. How much are you willing to spend? I have spent as much as $100 per bra. Now, I spend around $50 per bra.
2. How frequently do you replace them? Every 8-12 months. I wash them in the machine and hang to dry, but they do lose effectiveness over time.
3. How frequently do you measure? Every time I buy.
4. How many do you own? 3 underwires - I have no idea if that's few or a lot - I really only use that many. I also have a few bras left over from breastfeeding that are night-time ones - no actual cups, they are like sleeping bras. I take them on trips when we're around other family members so I can be comfy in my pj's but still somewhat covered and supported "in public" in my in-laws' family room.
And just for fun, what's your goofiest, funniest, or most embarrassing bra moment? Once in a dressing room, I couldn't get the hooks undone from the back (the metal was too tight and the hook wouldn't separate from the loop). I ended up wriggling out of it. But there were a few seconds of panic, "Oh no! What do I do?"

Not sure how many my wife has, but I'd probably at least 10 or so from the looks of the drawer when I put laundry away.
My thought just based on other clothes. I'd have enough to go 1-2 weeks before you had to wear the same ones again. It'll cut down on the wearing/washing which will make anything last longer.
I'll also toss in, my wife never buys anything full price. She waits for all the various sales.
I've been measured exactly once in my life and I probably will when I go again post-baby. My bras now are all due for replacement but I'm sticking it out since they are not done changing due to pregnancy.
I own probably 5 - 8? About 3 are in rotation at the moment because the others are too snug.

Now I'm just in nursing bras and tanks. I've tried to spend less on these ($20 and down) because they are a temporary use item and, for the FTM to be, they generally can't be re-worn (life gets messy...) so you need more in the rotation. My favorites are the French terry bras from online retailer Kindred Bravely, but they won't work if you need a lot of support (though the brand's other styles might). I'd like to really get fitted once nursing is done. I'm sure things will be very different.
Yes, things will be very different. One reason I buy new bras so frequently is due to pregnancy and breastfeeding. I had to buy new nursing bras for each of the 4 babies, and then had to have new bras once nursing was over for again, each of the 4 kids. I hate the shopping process, so I typically order like 10 online from a store I can return to in town and then keep what I like and that fits. My newest order is arriving this week...
One thing I have learned, which is very helpful, is that there are companion sizes for bras. You may measure one size for band and cup, but if you go up a cup, you can go down in band and vice versa. It means that if you really like a certain bra and it doesn't fit in your "size" you can go up or down in band or cup and maybe that bra will fit then. For this up-coming order, in includes 4 bras all of the same style, in 2 different sizes. These charts are online.
I find clothing fits better when I have the right bra on too.
I agree on VS. Totally. I stopped using them over a decade ago. Also, I hated feeling like I was entering an adult sex store every time I visited...I just never liked the vibe in there. Maybe that doesn't bother some people, but it did me...
Linda's Online has been helpful and has a wide array of sizes, colors, and types even sports, nursing, and mastectomy.
My issue would be spillage, but so many bras for larger "girls" are just frumpy. I have found some great ones online at retailers besides VS that offer really nice options for the larger proportions.
I have a few sports bras. For working out I have found it is worth spending a little more to get good wicking and better function.
Anyways.... I have a few brands that I like from Nordstrom. I watch for their semi-annual sales and buy then (usually you have to snag them on day one, or they're gone). On sale, they're usually around $35.
Currently, I have three bras in my rotation, two for the work week and one designated for the weekend.
So I'd say I usually spend $30 or less. My favorite bra was $10 at Walmart.
I probably have 15 bras in my current size. I don't like re-wearing them.
The only time I spend some decent $$ on bras is my running bras (run half marathons), and nursing bras. Those suckers get a workout.

The last time I was measured was over 3 years ago for my wedding. I went to Lane Bryant to get some "good" strapless bras, because my wedding dress was strapless. As it turned out, I ended up getting a corset from elsewhere instead.
But I did buy two bras at LB. Most expensive bras I've ever bought and I hardly wear them
. They were too small from the get-go. I even complained to the sales person when I tried them on that I needed the next band size up but she INSISTED that was the correct size. I still kick myself I didn't fight back harder. I wore them three different times and they were KILLING me by the end of the day because they were way too tight. I've since gotten those little extender things, but still haven't gotten into the habit of wearing them, unless it is a sundress and the strapless option is better. Just a pain.
For what it's worth, they do make strapless possible for well endowed women.
Other than that, I buy cheapie ones from Wal-mart. I usually have about 5. All underwires. Each one probably lasts about 6 months. I also have a couple sports bras.
Not so much a funny bra story, but a funny boob story.
I was having a dinner with a friend at a very nice 4-star restaurant. The kind of place where men have to wear coats. I'm wearing a cute cocktail dress with some cleavage going on. I go to the restroom and, when I come out, another woman is there and she exclaims, "Oh girl! Those are real aren't they?" I'm like, "Umm, are you talking about my boobs? Yes, they're real, lol." She goes on to say, "You are SO lucky! Mine cost $5K." I wasn't offended or anything. It was just funny. I got the definite vibe she was already a few glasses into a bottle of wine

I've never spent more than $40 on a bra. I have maybe 7? I'm not well-endowed (at all), so I can go bra-less on the weekend and with certain outfits. I've never really had stretch issues. Mine don't function to hold anything up though - they just provide another layer of cover for tops with thin fabric.
The bra I'm wearing today was purchased about 14 years ago when I was in high school. It's VS. It's still in good shape. I wash them in a lingerie bag on cold and hang dry them.
I finally found a great running bra from the Under Armour outlet store. Normally I have to double up to get something that fits right while still being supportive for high impact exercise (basically a bra style sports bra covered up by a tighter compression bra) but the one I found recently magically does both so I bought a few pairs right then and there. Normally I love the Champion line at Target as well but again, I usually have to double them up.
