Random...job interview question
Has anyone ever had a job interview and then just never heard back from the place?
I don't expect every place I send a resume to to give me an answer. But, job interviews are another story. It seems places should at least give me the courtesey of saying thanks but no thanks. Increasingly it seems, I go on job interviews, send a thank you note, and then just never, ever hear a word back from the place. I'm starting to think that there's something wrong with me.
These have been interviews where I generally think they have gone well. Eg the one a few weeks ago...called me within 24 hours of getting my resume, had a 45 minute phone interview later that day, and a 3 hour lunch interview the following day, with a promise to call me the next day. That was three weeks ago, and he has not returned my calls or emails.
I had another one where they gushed about how impressed they were with my writing sample, and telling me how various things on my resume were exactly what they were looking for. I sent them a thank you, and a follow up call and email, and never got a call or letter back.
There have been a few others in my lifetime, but these are the more recent examples.
Is this normal? Can you think of something that I might be doing to cause this?

it could very well be a case of you being one of the first to interview, but other candidates are taking longer and they simply don't yet who they are going to hire. Or, they could be done interviewing and the higher-ups are just taking their sweet-ass time making a final decision and getting back to HR about it.
I would continue - perhaps just on a weekly basis - to call or send an email to the contact person asking the status on the position.
In the first instance, there's only 3 other people that work there, so its definitely not an HR/bureaucracy issue, though I am assuming that they interviewed someone else. I don't understand why they can't just send me a "hey we've been busy but we'll be in touch soon" note or something. Particularly since he initially told me a specific day and time he'd be giving me an answer.
The second instance months ago. I had sent them a couple emails and left a couple messages over two or so months after the interview and never got a response. From any of the four people I met with. That particular interview also involved lunch, so it wasn't like some courtesy screening interview either.
It's just frustrating and this most recent one is just making me want to bang my head against a wall.
Do you ask what the next step will be or when will you hear back?
I do alot interviewing and I usually provide a time frame. Or in the interviews where it then has to go on to the dean for a second interview I make sure I know beforehand what his time frame is for asking them in. So I will then tell those people about the next level of interviews and when they will hear back and if they don't hear back that means they didn't make it. But for those positions where the applicant must go on to interview with the dean, HR is involved and they follow up with a sorry letter.
I guess all I can suggest is it wouldn't be a bad idea to ask what you should expect about a follow up or hearing an answer at the end of the interview.
Yes, I've had this happen to me before and it's not uncommon from what I understand. It sucks to wait for an answer that may never come. I would at least like to receive a generic letter saying that the position has been filled.

This has happened to me several times. Even though they said at the end of the interview, "you will be hearing from us regardless."

ESF, that's really crappy. I've never had that happen to me, but then I haven't gone on a ton of interviews in my lifetime.
I hope you hear something from them soon. Even though they're behaving like assclowns.
This is a good point, and probably a reasonable expectation for the situation.
Anyway, thanks for the support. It's just bewildering to go from, "we really need someone to start ASAP because we've got a huge filing due on Feb. 20 that we need help with, so we will call you tomorrow morning" to total and complete silence for almost three weeks.

That sucks. This happened to me once...I took a day off work to go to Baltimore for an interview and they never bothered to give me an answer.
While I'm sorry all of you have dealt with this before too, I feel better knowing I'm not alone. Amazing how rude places can be.
Yeah, it's not that there's something wrong with you, it's just the way some companies are these days.
Wait, unless there's something wrong with all of us...hmm...
