Ya ain't comin' in

This morning I'm laying out my clothes for work, about to get in the shower, and the doorbell rings. It's 2 guys with the gas company wanting to come in and check where the line comes in.

Sure we got a letter from the gas company saying they would be doing work and may need access to our property. And yes, there have been 3 huge trucks for the past week doing work on the gas lines.

But yeah, no. Anybody can get an orange vest and a hard hat.

So I said, "No, you can't come in right now. I don't know if you're actually with the gas company, and my husband isn't home, and I'm getting ready for work. You can come back when he's here."

They seemed annoyed. But whatevs.

The cats were acting very odd stalking around. Granted they usually are nuts, but I felt the need to listen to them and I locked the door before I got in the shower.

I'm also calling the gas company just to make sure.

Kind of makes me sad my first inclination is think "home invader" instead of "guys trying to do thier job". But you never know these days.

Re: Ya ain't comin' in

  • Yeah, I'm paranoid, too.

I think they would give you more specifics and notice about when they would need access to your property, so you could prepare or reschedule.

Most of the time, if I'm home by myself, I don't answer the door unless I'm expecting someone.

  • I don't blame you. You can never be too careful. We moved into our first home just after Christmas, and I am AMAZED by how many times my doorbell rings with people trying to sell me crap!!
  • One reason I love having a big dog with a scary bark (and an even scarier bite, if he really felt it necessary).  Anyone comes to my door, I'll just let Dusty bark at it for a bit.  Bonus points if the main door is open and they can see him through the glass door.  No one would try to force their way into my house unless they shoot Dusty dead first.
  • That's ok, I don't even answer the door. Better safe than sorry. Now, when i still lived at home, i didn't have any qualms because my lab Romeo was very good at scaring people and could assess them well. The one time my mom had a plumber there.. one that wasn't usually there.. he was doing work down in the basement. For some reason, he wanted to come upstairs.. there was no reasonat all for him to do so. I opened the door, Romeo was right beside me. The guy saw him, Romeo growled and that was that...Romeo never growled so i took it as a sign.

  • There are too many crazies out there!!!!!  good for you for holding your ground.  I'm taking a handgun safety course just in case... especially if DH gets deployed and I will be in my new house by myself -- it's all woods around the house and no close neighbors!  Better safe than sorry...
  • I love that I have two big, black, half rotti dogs. No one wants to come near them. When we are walking them people cross the road to avoid them. They are the sweetest dogs ever but beacuse they are so big no one wants to come near them. We had someone come to the door at 8:00pm a while ago and I made DH answer it after the dogs gave a nice loud bark so the guy would know that there were two dogs here also. :)

  • DH is going to work from home tomorrow morning until the gas guys stop by again.

On the upside, we got a good bit of the basement organized so it's moderately acceptable for them to go in.

Ha! I think we need a dog. My cats just skulk around suspiciously. More shifty than scary.

BTW, when I called the gas company they said thier workers carry ID. The two dudes at my door didn't offer up any ID when they asked to come in. I'm not calling them shady because they probably are with the gas company, but wouldn't you think they'd lead off with showing that first? Make it a wee more official?
