? for the plant experts

I'm starting to think about what plants I want to get this year for our backyard...last year I fell in love with a plant that I saw at Stauffer's called Moonlight Scotch Broom that was tall and had these bright yellow flowers on it.  I was thinking it would be pretty at the front corners of our deck but I did a google search and some people say its invasive in different states around here and included on their invasive plants lists (NY, MA, VA, etc).  I found a list for PA (and I didn't see it on the list) but does any one have any experience with this plant?

Re: ? for the plant experts

  • If Stauffer's is selling it I highly doubt this species is invasive to PA (yet), but wikipedia says otherwise for the US.  I can ask one of the biologists at work tomorrow if they would plant it in their yard.
  • Awesome!  Thanks Denise I really appreciate it.
  • We have several broom bushes and I love them.  They are nice because the branches stay green year round and then they have these beautiful flowers in the spring..my favorite are the red and yellow ones.  I don't think they are invasive...they can get big, but I don't think they spread runners or anything.  HTH.
  • Thanks Dawn!  That definitely helps.  I'm plant stupid but they were so pretty I kept thinking about wanting them for our backyard.  I did read they get big but I was hoping that if we kept it trimmed that it wouldn't get out of control.
  • I asked our plant person, he said they can be invasive and would go with something else for his yard.  Does your yard back onto woods or a field?  He also said that they don't real well in our zone, the snow can break them down.

  • Hmm...no our yard slopes off then there's the side view of the another townhouse behind ours.  Thanks for asking Denise!
