DH worked from home this morning to deal with the gas guys.
And low and behold, they need to take the whole meter out of the basement, and rip out a chunk of yard to put a big horkin' utility box in front of our house.
Hey gas company, the letter you sent said you may need access, not "Hey, we're gonna need to come into your house, rip out your old meter and replace it with this huge box thing and dig up virtually your whole yard. Also, we'll need to rip up your sidewalk and into the road. K-Thanx-Bye."
The guy explaining it to DH couldn't have been nicer and he said it sucked but he would do the best he could. All the houses in the neighborhood have to get the boxes because they're switching systems and the meters can't be inside.
Ugh!!!!
I'm going to call the gas company corporate office and ask for some sort of correspondence about why and what they'll do to our house. Our house is old and nothing is ever straight forward with the way it's built, so if something goes wrong I want documentation.
DH says I won't get anywhere because I'm dealing with "the man". Maybe, but I am a very loud squeaky wheel. *SQUEEEEAAAK*
See that little thunder bolt? That's me. The Millers Storm is coming.
Re: Well, they came in
Eh, I agree that was totally unprofessional. I've worked with residential utilities before, and handled it differently. At minimum, there should have been a more detailed letter with a phone number to contact if you had questions. Also, the contractors should have offered you ID when you questioned them.
If they're ripping up your yard and sidewalk, you should find out when and how they plan to repair it - not IF.
Update: It was one of those phone calls where I really wanted to be a witch, but I knew I couldn't because I wouldn't get anywhere.
I was rewarded by finally reaching someone who could tell me what was going on. I asked all my questions. Got good answers. Reassurance holes would be filled, and any curbs and sidewalks would be restored to the way they looked. (We are still taking pictures before the work starts.) She also apologized for the vagueness of the letter we received about the work. Bonus.
She gave me her name and I got her direct line should I have any more questions or anything is funky.
I'm skeptical, but feel much better than I did this morning. That sounds more promising - I'm glad you got somewhere with your phone calls. I hope everything goes smoother from now on!
