Mattress Shopping RANT

We're in dire need of a new mattress and lately I've had horrible horrible headaches that have been diagnosed as tension headaches--although physically related not stress. I now have to go to physical therapy for my neck - and basically I know a new mattress would really help.

So this past weekend, we started to look and got a good idea of what we wanted. Tonight we headed to Mattress Warehouse, although we were both dreading it. But...they do have the largest selection in our area that we're aware of so we figured we'd give it a try.

Literally, as we were walking through the door I reminded DH (who can often be too-friendly and strike up conversation easily) to keep our eyes down and not make eye contact. We had already decided that we were ONLY looking as we obviously wanted to come home and do some more research before making a final decision.

Literally the moment we place our hand on a mattress someone beelines for us. Basically we tell her what we're looking for (but just looking tonight) and fifteen minutes later she is getting the manager to "see what kind of deal she can make us." UGH. I hate, hate sales people like this--I know there are some good ones out there. I know it is their job, but do they have to act like that?

She offers to take $500 off. We kindly thank her, but remind her that we're not making a final decision tonight. The manager then runs over and I've never been so creeped out in my entire life. I can't even describe his demeanor, but it was so akward. Basically, he tried to give us the $4500 model for the $3500 if we bought tonight. Still NO. Then he says, how about we finance it? No thanks, we'll be paying upfront. (Although I'm convinced I'll find this same bed for less elsewhere).

He then spiels into a 5 minute lecture about how you only get rich by making money off of either people and tells us we should put the cash into a CD and still take out a loan for a freaking mattress so that I can make $100 in interest off of this. NO. I thought businesses wanted cash? His he really getting commission off of a 0% loan? Doubt it.

DH and I laughed all the way home and probably said some unkind things that I won't type here. It was literally the classic, worst-possible salesman experience I've ever had. I would pay more money elsewhere without having to step foot in there EVER again.

?So...any recommendations about where to buy a mattress? We're willing to come up to PA and are looking for a Simmons NXG model, or something similar if anyone has bought a mattress lately that they're happy with. My back and neck need it!

?

Re: Mattress Shopping RANT

  • Ugh, mattress sales people are some of the worst.  I'm sorry you had such a bad experience.  Gregg and I shopped for at least 8 months for a new mattress so we hit several stores many times.  He has a bad back so we needed to try them out with different feelings to see whether he would still be happy.  The sales people drove me crazy and we got a little mean with them to leave us alone and I hate doing that.

Good luck with your search!  We ended up getting a Simmons pillowtop and it's my favorite thing, it makes all of the difference now and I'm glad that we took our time.

  • Hey Stacey, do you mind sharing where you bought your Simmons from? Literally, we're willing to drive anywhere and Columbia would be even closer then going back home somewhere. Frederick only has a few places that we're quickly?exhausting. Thanks!
  • Ugh I don't blame you for not wanting to go back there!  Do you guys have a Sleepy's down there?  I haven't gone mattress shopping in 6 years and even then I bought one at the furniture store where I bought my headboard.

No, I don't mind sharing.  I'll try to think of all of the places we looked and where we ended up buying and send you an email.  We also waited for a holiday sale because they seem to have great bedding sales on weird holidays.

  • I'd recommend Value City Furniture in Hburg. We got a king size bed, king size mattress (which is REALLY comfy!), dresser, mirror, coffee table, 2 end tables and a drum table for a total of $4300!! They have a good selection of mattresses!
  • Jen, we don't have a Sleepy's, but Stacey mentioned one in Columbia. I'm thinking that we'll be taking a drive to her area since they have more to offer.

    Hopefully we'll have some success!?

  • we just went through this presidents day.sleepys was the worst.some of their mattresses they had in back for sale just looked dirty.we went everywhere and ended up at mattress warehouse in lanc and had a great experience with them.
  • Since you know which model you are looking for - look online - Mattress warehouse, discounters, etc all have websites.   I know how horrible shopping for a mattress is - I finally gave up and just picked one online and had it delivered.   I love it- it was one of the house brands, but I was so sick of shopping I didn't care and it was pillow top.

I just googled it and US mattress seems to have it with free shipping http://www.us-mattress.com/simmons-beautyrest-nxg-250-p-king.html?productid=simmons-beautyrest-nxg-250-p-king&channelid=FROOG

    Cancer sucks.
  • Be careful that you are getting NEW mattress/boxspring. many stores sell reconditioned ones. Check reviews online to ensure of what you may be getting. It's often times the bargain priced stores that do that and don't necessarily tell you this up front.

  • I sympathize.  Good luck comparison shopping and researching though.  The mattress companies make the same mattress different models for different stores so it's nearly impossible.
  • Ick, how annoying, Megan!  Good luck with the process - just keep in mind that it'll be worth the hassle when you have your perfect, comfy new mattress. :)
  • Ugh! I am so not a hard sale kind of person. When DH and I went to a mattress store we got the same thing. This lady wouldn't let us just lay down and see if we liked it. She was so nosey and followed us around and told us how much everything was before out butts hit the bed.

We wound up at JC Penney and got an awesome mattress. It was on sale but it was way cheaper than anything else we saw. And so comfy. Soooooooo comfy. Even better was when the sales guy told us if we had any questions he'd be available, but he doesn't like to hover. SOLD!

  • We bought a Lemoyne sleeper and were thrilled with the price and quality. We purchased one that has a 20 year warranty, but the different models vary on warranty.

We L-O-V-E our bed. And the sales people were fantastic. We purchased at the york store, on route 30.

  • I'd try Costco, in-store and/or online.
  • Thanks for all of the suggestions ladies! There were some good points--while I've been looking online, I hadn't considered buying online. Norticprincess--I may page you if I feel we're more interested in this route!

We're head out to look again Friday night at some different places. Hopefully with more luck and better sales people!?
