Prenatal Vitamin ?

Okay ladies -- DH and I had a discussion tonight regarding TTC and when we'd like to start and all that stuff.  He's got the baby fever B-A-D.  I mean, Bad.

We plan on starting towards the end of the year, once we get settled in the house and all.

I'd like to start taking prenatal vitamins now -- but is just a regular prenatal enough, or should I supplement with something else?

Re: Prenatal Vitamin ?

  • When we started TTC I was just taking a regular over the counter prenatal vitamin.... when I got pregnant I ended up switching to a prescription one... once the babies were born and I was breast feeding I went back to the OTC one.  The only thing that I had to supplement with was iron but that was later on into my pregnancy.... Good luck!
  • Originally I started with OTC and then my doctor switched me to a prescription and gave me supplements-DHA.?I guess you could ask your doctor, but my feeling is that OTC is probably fine, especially if you aren't TTC yet. My doctor wasn't concerned about the OTC, but offered the prescription and felt I should use supplements since we were trying.

I've been fine, but I know some people complain about upset stomach or other side effects so you might have to find the brand that works best for you. ?

  • I've been taking OTC prenatal vitamins for a while, since DH and I are "unofficially" trying.  I just get mine at Wal-Mart...I think they are about $5-$6 and last a couple months.  One of the most important things is the Folic Acid and I think they all have about the same level.
  • I had always taken the prescription ones with Eli but then I was so sick I could not take them so I just took 2 flintstones for the rest of my pregnancy. ?With this pregnancy I started with just OTC vitamins but now they make me too sick so I am back on the 2 flintstones!
  • When we started to TTC I just took a folic acid vitamin.  I started taking a prescription prenatal when I officially became pregnant.  There were too many OTC vitamins that I was overwhelmed and just stuck to the folic acid.
  • I started taking OTC prenatals (Target brand) as soon as we started TTC but you can't start too early.  It is recommended that any woman of child bearing age get the amount of folic acid that is found in prenatals so I say start ASAP.  My Dr. asked after I got pregnant if I was taking prenatals.  I said yes and that was the end of that.  No discussion of prescriptions or supplements.  Mine never made me sick but I take them right before bed.

     Good luck!

  • Yeah, I always took the OTC pills when I was TTC and even when I was pregnant with Rachel.  I really need to start taking them again though.  I stopped a few months after Rachel was born.
