Anyone grow their own veggies?

I'm trying my hand this year...but I really know nothing about gardening.  I bought seeds for cukes, lettuce, and green beans.  When am I supposed to plant these?  Should I plant them inside first in the little peat pots then transfer them outside?  Anyone have any reference websites?

TIA!

Re: Anyone grow their own veggies?

  • We plant two types of cucumbers, regular red/green/orange peppers, and then hot peppers for salsa.  If you look on the packets of seeds, there should be instructions on how far in advance you need to plant them and when their typical harvest is.

We planted our seeds inside last weekend in a seed starter greenhouse (at Lowes).  Once the seedlings are growing to the height of the greenhouse, we will remove the lid.  You want to keep them inside until there isn't a chance of frost.

  • As pp said start them in the little greenhouse thingys. They are really easy to do. We just sat them on a window sill and made sure they stayed moist. It's much easier planting seedlings outside than trying to start seeds. Also remember that some may not work so sow more seeds that you may need seedlings. If you do have extra, you can always give them away or grow them and give the fruits of your labors away.

We've done this for veggies and herbs. However, I will say that since we don't want a ton of plants and anything we just buy the various seedings. We love going to the Herb and Garden Faire at Landis Valley. That's where we get most of our stuff each year.

What we don't find there, get at Stauffers or Lowes and sometimes even Walmart, never Home Depot. Every plant I've bought from them has died.  We're gonna miss going this year : (

  • Hi Mel!

Start them now. Move them outside no earlier than May.  Make lots of friends.  Cucumbers tend to be heavy producers and will need lots of space to grow in.

I will be doing tomatoes, lettuce, peppers, squash, and anything I find that looks promising.  I will do small plants since we will be moving in 2 weeks and thus can't do the seedling thing.

It's really fun to see what grows and what does not.  You could end up with 50 cucumbers and zero peppers...it's nuts!
