Lori

I need flying tips from you. We're going to FL in December and Mary will be 2 weeks shy of a year old. I haven't flown in 9 years let alone with a 1 year old. I would love some travel tips.

Re: Lori

  • Sure!

Will you get her a seat or keep her as a lap child?  If she's anything like Sarah, I'd get her a seat and bring her carseat.  I had a hard time holding her from Reno.  Talk to the airline, you might be able to get a discount for her even if she's getting her own seat.

We're going to check Sarah's stroller (does NOT count towards baggage limit) and bring her in her carseat around the airport on a Gogo Kidz Travelmate (found at BRU).  We'll then fold it up and store it in the overhead bin. For shorter trips, we don't bring her carseat (we have one available for use at friends' and familys' places) so we bring her in an umbrella stroller and gate check it.

We had Sarah on milk by 2 weeks before her birthday (her pedi's suggestion) so we didn't have to worry about formula.  She was also on sippy cups by then, too.  We brought a thermos of milk (to keep it cold) - no issue with security and empty sippy cups (the kind she likes can leak) and just refilled the cups as needed.  We have found that most airlines do not carry milk, so be sure to stock up before getting on the plane.  When we brought formula and bottles, we would fill 2-3 bottles with already made formula and keep them in our carryon and then pack the can in our luggage with the extra bottles (and cleaning brush).

We always bring snacks with us...the gerber graduates come in great containers...puffs, cheese puffs, cookies, etc.  We just bring a few of those.  We prefer to leave that kind of food in their original container, just in case security questions us.  This last trip, though, I brought her french toast fingers, cut up grapes and some cheese in little rubbermaid containers and no one questioned it (unlike the previous trip)...go figure!

We bring small toys and books that don't have small (lose-able) pieces.  She's been more interested in people-watching, looking out the window and playing with the stuff found in the seatpocket.  If you can, request a bulkhead row - more room for Mary to move around!  We couldn't do that on Southwest...they were gone by the time we got on the plane.  Familes don't usually have preferential boarding anymore on any airline (I've yet to find one...).

For our Ireland trip (with a layover in Chicago) our plan is to run her little butt off while we're at the airport.  Hopefully that will help tire her out!  We also bought one of those monkey backpack leash thingys - she's so active and the airports are so busy, we don't want to take any chances!  Her pedi also suggested giving her some tylenol before getting on the flight to Dublin (in Chicago) to help her sleep - so the time change isn't so rough on her (it's an 11 hour flight).  We're bringing her "lovey" (don't usually bring it on the plane), some new toys (so she's not bored with them already), some flashcards (I'll have all that time with a "captive" audience to teach her so many new things!) and some books.  I think we're also going to download some Sesame Street episodes on DH's iPhone for her to watch - she doesn't usually watch TV but we figured we'd give it a shot.

    I think that's it...for now...if I think of more, I"ll post!  :-)

  • Thank you so much. I have a lot to learn. I didn't think carseats were allowed on planes.

Yup, they're allowed.  Just make sure it has a label on it that says it's FAA approved (or something like that).  Our friends just took their 18 month old to Florida and used the CARES harness.  We'd love to use that for Sarah but she's not at that weight limit yet and we would have to rent a car seat (in Ireland) which we don't want to do.  http://www.kidsflysafe.com/
