Alabaster/Calera/Montevallo/that general side of town ladies

There have been a few people here at work and elsewhere that when they find out where DH and I are moving, they start into this whole schpeel about how terrible the traffic is, how I'm going to hate that side of town SO MUCH, and how I'm going to wish I never moved there.

Let's be honest here. Is the traffic so horrible? I used to drive to work from Moody and it took about the same amount of time that it takes us to get from the shelby co. airport exit to 280, foregoing 459 and getting off at 119.

Is the back way from Alabaster to Chelsea quicker?

=( These debbie downers are really popping my bubble...

  • I don't live over there but I just wanted to say that you should just ignore them. You're not going to be living on the streets stuck in traffic..you're going there because you love the house and obviously wouldn't have gone to look at it if you weren't willing to live in that area. Tell them to shove it and get a life

    Yes

I think I probably sound a little bit like a beebee in my OP, but it's so dang frustrating! I mean, what is it with the people I work with and unsolicited advice??!

It sounds like jealousy is at work here, they are probably jealous about your new home and your happiness and just want to throw some rain on your parade. Don't allow it. People can be so mean sometimes.

  • There is a back way that takes you to Chelsea w/out you having to get on the interstate.

Traffic is bad, but it is also bad commuting into town from 280, and various other areas---you just get used to it.

No, I don't think you do. It really irks me when people can't let others enjoy what's going on in their life and something like buying a house is uber exciting.

If I give you my e-mail address will you tell me how to get there?

I mean... I was totally used to the drive when I lived out in St. Clair Co.

  • I currently take 65 from Hoover to UAB for work.  I don't think it's terrible at all.  Some days suck, but you can say that about any road.  I'll be driving from Alabaster to downtown and have co-workers who do the same and we don't think anything of it.  I wouldn't worry at all about going to Chelsea.  These people need to shut their pie-hole.

I agree with all of this. I think it's a mixture of both. One CW in particular's daughter is my age and any time anything great happens to me she puts a negative slant on it =(

Thanks for helping me realize that I'm not crazy =) I was hearing it so much that I thought I needed to be concerned and I started panicking a little bit... But then, Jason has talked to people who live in the area where he works and he said that they don't mind the commute a bit and that they love it out there. I guess that's the difference between working in an office full of women and an office full of men.

  • I have a best friend who lives in Calera and works on 280, she takes the back roads also.  She said the traffic is bad but it isn't horrible and lets face it, traffic is bad everywhere, especially on 280.  People need to mind their business and just get over it.  Ry and I moved out a little further than we really intended to also.  We don't mind the commute (25 min) and we wouldn't have it any other way.  Only you and your dh know what's right for you guys, and if you love the house, the commute won't be bad.
  • Sure! It's really easy......however, I have not traveled that way during rush hour, so you might have to experiment w/ both ways to find out which is actually the best.

  • I don't live out that way, but ignore them.  I don't like telling some people things because it opens the door to their own issues.  I'm happy for you!
  • As you've heard me say before - everyone has an opinion and its neither right nor wrong b/c it's just that - their opinion.  That being said it doesn't mean we have to like or agree with it!!  ha ha.  I think you live where you want to b/c you like a place and it's your home.  Not for where it's located to work, etc b/c we all know you may not be working at the same place 5, 10 + yrs down the road.  I heard all this when I would move in ATL (and trust me the traffic is MUCH worse there!!!!!) and I'd just ignore people.

Plus, my mom always says that what someone says to you may not be the way they intended for you to interpret it, we are all going to interpret everything differently.  While some people think that by telling you that the traffic is horrible, you will hate that (they aren't thinking that they should help to enjoy your excitement in a new/first home!!!!  and remember I don't know your CW's.) and are thinking that they are helping you by sharing this info - when all it does is burst your bubble.  It's so hard, and I totally understand.  Plus, who's to say you'll be traveling to work at the same time as everyone else!?!!?!?  You'll figure the best route and time to/from work.

To each his own and ignore these people.

  • I don't have any advice about the traffic, but what town will you be in?? We'll be close! We should meet up for dinner or lunch some time. :)

  • Girl...don't let people get you down!  If you have found a home that you and J love....just go with it...and everything else will fall into place :)

Just enjoy this time..it's not everyday you buy your first home!!  Don't let these people steal your joy :)

  • Aww, AM, people are lame and just have to rain on parades. :-P

I used to live down there, and I go down there regularly. I love my commute because it's the opposite-from north down to that area, but honestly, you will like living down there. it's so quiet and very pretty. it'll be worth it. you may have to be careful and experiment with timing but I don't really think it could be worse than 280! I hate 280, I would take 65 over that any day.?

good luck with everrything with the house!?

  • Well- my commute was horrible when I worked on 280 but I worked on the Mountain Brook side. ?One of the main back-up spots for me was 31 in Alabaster just trying to get to the interstate!!!! ?A good 20-30 minutes for 2 mile drive. ?My total commute was a little over an hour each way. ?(working 8-5) ?I do have to say I don't miss it one bit!!!! ?:)

    Thanks girl! Good to know...

Fortunately, I'll be able to skip most of that via 65 and 119 :-D I am so excited! You girls have helped me feel so much better about all of this.

Did you enjoy your trip to PCB?

  • Well, I hate to be a Debbie Downer but...

The drive from Pelham/Alabaster into Birmingham is getting to us and we plan on putting our house on the market in the next week or two. We usually use I-65-- it's worse in the afternoons than in the mornings. However, I think the root of the problem is the construction at 119-- which means eventually it will improve.

Some people don't mind the drive though and I dont know anything about taking the back way to Chelsea so I hope it won't be too bad for you. Like someone said earlier... it will take a little time for you to find the best time of the day to travel.

Congrats on your new house though! That's exciting!

  • Thanks everybody for all of the positive comments =) DH and I went to spend time with my mom and stepdad last night and between y'all and them giving us a pep talk, our nerves are finally at peace.

Between my co-worker and IL's, the negativity was REALLY getting to us. My MIL has been stone cold to DH ever since she found out that we're moving...
