Seriously, Ya'll turning 30 has changed my metabolism and NOT in a good way. I have gained about 5 lbs and no matter what I do [except for starve myself, which I am not willing to do] I can't lose it.
I am not looking for advice on food - I have a pretty good handle on that. What I am looking to discuss is what kind of workouts are you guys doing?
I alternate between TKB, running, Spin, and the 30DS. I work out on average 4 or 5 times a week. and I am getting burnt out.
to give you an idea of a typical week:
Mon - TKB
Tues - run 5-7 miles
W - rest or shred
Th - run or shred or rest
F - Spin
Sat - run 6-10 miles
I would like to try yoga, or pilates, or something else, but I am not sure what.
suggestions?
Re: let's talk exercise...
the moment i hit 30, my metabolism came to a screeching halt too. it's tough, and i seriously think the extended nursing is the only thing keeping me from weighing 300 pounds.
of course, i'm the one who's had the 30DS DVD sitting on the shelf, unopened, for over a week. i desperately need the motivation to get off my ass and do it.
yoga is awesome. i loved it when i took classes. i also really enjoyed kickboxing class. so much fun, and a great way to get some aggression out, too
I rec pilates. It's a TOTALLY different work out and muscles you never knew you had will be sore. It focuses on core strength and posture, and it also helps combat stress. My mom does pi-yo, a combo of pilates and yoga, and that also incorporates more breathing technique and stress reduction.
Ever do other classes at the gym? I like to mix it up and get into a new one every once in a while.
Hi ! I'd be happy to share with you what I do. I'm 24 (25 next month!) I am a ballet dancer, so I'm always maintaining my body and cardio ect.
*Ballet class 3 x a week.
*Bikram Yoga 2x a week - I am an HUGE believer in this. Nothing keeps my in better shape than this. If you have any questions about this, I'd be happy to talk more with you about it.
*supplement these with (or in addition to, like on the weekends.) running/walking on treadmill for 30-45 min.Free weights for arms and back and do abs.
*and STRETCH! Alot! It is SO good for you and gets so easily overlooked by many people.
Have you incorporating weight lifting into your routine? I know 30DS incorporates handweights, but I'm thinking something a little more intensive.
Running is my main exercise, and I incorporate yoga into my routine too. I'm adding indoor rock climbing to the mix, so I can get over the walls for the Mud Run in July.
In the past I've done Bikram yoga, boot camp, cardio kick, hiphop, and step. Bootcamp and Cardio Kickboxing were by far my favorite group classes.
My metabolism did the same thing at 30. Sucks. But I am also pretty lazy. I need to get back into exercising regularly.
I have heard nothing but great things about Pilates classes (with the reformer).
After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!
I would definitely recommend doing more strength training/weights. I hear over and over how it helps you to burn more calories for hours after you have done it.
I worked out with a personal trainer 3 days a week for 2 years. The one thing I told him was "I want everything smaller, I don't want anything to get bigger" He knew I thought I might bulk up with the weights. He said it's nearly impossible for a woman to bulk up unless she is lifting heavy weights for hours and using supplements.(basically you would have to be doing it on purpose). He was right. I was lifting some heavy weights by the end and I leaned up. I saw muscles that I had never seen before.

ditto the strength training recs. i've worked out with a trainer and am now taking a weight lifting class at my gym and it makes a big difference.
i'm almost at 30 and i feel like my metabolism is taking a nose dive.
it totally sucks!
thanks for the tips. I can't believe how quickly my metabolism changed when I hit 30.
I would love to hear more about Pilates.
I used to do bootcamp and we did a lot of strength training, but it's so difficult for me to get my azz up at 5am to work out. I suppose it wouldn't kill me to throw in a SET class or something like that.
Ananda - I just can't bring myself to count calories. I'm no good at it. I could cut down on my booze consumption.
