  • OMG, you were at your senior prom in 2003. I feel so old.
  • I feel old when i look at it too.  I miss high school sometimes.  Life was simpler then.

  • So cute elizabeth! My senior prom was in 01.
  • My senior prom would've been in 2001, but my school did Junior Prom, so it was 2000 (I didn't go.)

Sorry, but I hate when people do that - I have a CW who constantly does the "That makes me feel SO OLD" line and she's only 6 years older than I am. LOL  To me that doesn't make her all that much older than me and I sure as hell don't fit in with the 26 year olds in my area.

  • You look really pretty! Wow!!! I can't believe you were at your prom in 2003.  I was out of college 4 years by then.  Mine was in 1995.....I'm old.

  • I just thought of something - when people say "That makes me feel so old!" what are you supposed to say in response?  "Really? I guess that DOES make you old!"  I think I'm going to try that next time on my CWs. LOL

    LOL Paula!

It's actually a pet peeve of mine. LOL  I've dealt with it MY ENTIRE LIFE - every place I've worked except the one place in England. *sigh* It's like I'm forever doomed to be the "baby" at any workplace... even with 5 years seniority. Confused

Why?  It's better than saying "You're so young!"  Now, I could see how that would be annoying.

There are going to be things in life that make people feel old.  It's a fact.  When you have an almost 10 year age difference it brings up certain memories.  My sister and I are 9 years apart.  She is in her early 20's and going out and doing things I did 10 years ago.  There's nothing wrong with feeling old.  It's part of getting older.  Doesn't mean we don't embrace our age, but it brings up memories that happened a while ago and maybe haven't thought of for some time.  And fwiw, I don't think anyone is looking for a response to those statements.  It's something that just comes out, almost thinking out loud.

Well said Kristi.  It is definitely not said to make someone feel bad either.

  • Regardless of if it's intended to make someone feel bad about being younger, it does in my case at work... so next time, I'm going to say something like "Well I guess you're right.. that DOES make you old!" because then perhaps they'll get that it does sting (even though they know it bothers me, they all STILL do it in unison.)

Why do you assume that they know it bothers you?

  • I've said straight out that I hate it when they do and point out the one CW isn't all that much older than me.  It really got old on my bday, to the point I was angry and irritated.

Oh, well then they need to stop since they know it bothers and upsets you.  That's not cool.

  • The reason it's become such a hot button issue for me is most of my adult life, I've been given the "You're ONLY XX?!?" line when people find out my age.  More recently, I've been on the receiving end of disrespect following that line.  Truly, in 50% of my jobs people have treated me as an equal until they find out my age, and then they treat me quite differently, second guess everything I do, and actually disregard what I say because I'm "only XX."
  • That's horrible that is how they treat you, it's a form of age discrimination.  I know where I work, we are not allowed to ask someone how old they are.  Same as the last company.  I have seen people get written up for this, but usually because someone asks a person who is older.  I don't think my way of dealing with things like this is the best way, I'll admit it.  I work with people that are older than me (I can guess a range, I don't know for sure, although some people just volunteer their ages).  And there have been times I have been talked down to.  And I go right back at them.  Like I said, not the best way, but it has earned their respect (in a sick way when you think about it).  And I'm not proposing you do it.  What I am proposing (and forgive my tired brain right now), is finding a way you feel comfortable in addressing it the next time it happens.  You're a very smart, articulate woman.  I would bet money they give you a hard time because they are insecure with themselves, especially when they see that you are a smart, articulate woman doing an excellent job and exceling at her job.  It's almost like standing up to the bully in school.

  • I've been contimplating this "That makes me feel so old" comment.  And have come to the realization that when people say that to me, it just makes me think "Wow, I am young after all!" because, generally speaking, when people say something about only being 21 or whatever I feel REALLY old.  Granted I'm only 29, but when I look at where one of the girls that works for me is in her life, compared to where I am, I feel so much older because I've done the college thing, done the grad school thing, got a steady job, got married, etc.  And she's just a few years out of high school and trying to decide what to do with her life.  That makes me feel old partially because when I was her age - I had a 10 year plan which means even at HER age I was older than she was, if that makes sense?

Oh, and when Graves said her hs prom was in 2003 my first thought was "Wow, I was a year from becoming a lawyer when she was a senior in high school..."  THAT is a huge difference because when I think of where I was as a senior in hs and where I was my second year of law school...wow.

SO, I think that most people (maybe not the ones you work with though Paula) don't mean it as an insult but rather as a statement of fact.  In the case of your work I imagined it being more of something like this: "I can't believe you are here, doing what you are doing, and I'm here doing the same thing and I'm so much older than you..." which is really them insulting themselves, if that makes sense, and a compliment to you.

  • Oh, and Paula, I think next time someone at work says that to you you should say "You know, I have done really well for myself in my life pretty quickly, haven't I?"
  • I think that's partially it, Mandy.  Age doesn't factor in anything.  We've all gotten along fairly well on this board, and if I'm 2-10 years younger than some of you, it has never been a factor in anything.  And yet, when our numbers get thrown out, it often winds up with you getting "lumped together" with other 29 year olds, and me being "lumped together" with other 26 year olds.

Maybe this is a result of having such older siblings. I never got along with kids my age, and was so thankful to get out of the high school scene and into college!
