Opinions on Fasting Diets?

One more thing I have to ask, has anyone tried the Master Cleanse diet by Stanley Burroughs? My hairdresser did it and DH's friend did it and one lost 50 pounds and the other 15 and both said they were never tired or grouchy at all and feel like they are a new person now. DH and I are seriously planning to do it, I don't know why because I love food and have never done anything like this, WW works for us, but I am looking forward to it from a spiritual perspective. If you haven't heard of it it is basically the fasting lemonade diet. You make and drink a few quarts of a mixture of purified water, fresh lemon juice, cayenne pepper, and molasses and that's it for 10-40 days. The book advises to focus on your spiritual, mental, physical, etc. life all of the toxins from your body will be released. I don't believe all of the magical mojo he writes about in his book, my job is healthcare afterall, but my body just feels yuck right now and I am so busy I either forget to eat or eat like total crap. I'm curious what God will think about me fasting; think He will sustain me or strike me with a fierce pension for a donut just for kicks? MMMmmmm donuts!

Re: Opinions on Fasting Diets?

  • I tried it several years ago. It didn't taste bad really but I only did it like three days per week. It worked pretty well and I lost weight. My friend, who turned me on to it, stayed on it the proper amount of time...she said it was awesome what her body got rid of and I won't go further...but cleanse?...it certainly did that.
  • i would never fast for weight loss purposes.i'd consider that more of a 'cleanse' not fasting in the spiritual sense.

i think planning to fast takes the focus off of what fasting is supposed to be about. it becomes more about rules..what you can and can't eat..can and can't drink...how long you've gone w/o food, etc.

personally, i feel like our prayer life leads us to fasting...we're so wrapped up in prayer and in a deep walk with god that it leads us to forget about all else..including food.

    just my two cents

  • I generally don't like things like this. Nutrition is necessary for your body to function. Cutting out food groups (or FOOD!) is a no no in my book.

Everything in moderation. It should be a lifestyle change (for example, WW or eating clean).

You should post this question on the health and fitness board. They could give you some great insight.

ditto...also, be ready for some of the people on the health and fitness board to give strong opinions on this.

    This.

I also agree with Lauren H that bodies need food to function. Crash diets are NEVER successful long term and they're harmful to our bodies.

What's your best bet? What you've been hearing all along: a well balanced diet low in saturated fats, sugars, and sodium and exercise.

mypyramid.gov will generate your own personal food pyramid based on weight loss goals, activity level, and your stage in life.

Also... I'm not usually the one to be all high and mighty or a holy roller but your tone about God striking you etc etc etc made me feel a little uncomfortable. All walks of life visit our boards, please remember to be sensitive to things people are touchy about like religion and politics! :(

  • I don't advocate these diets at all.  I also don't consider them fasting.  Your body will cleanse itself if you eat a proper diet consistently - you will only hurt yourself in the long run with an impromptu starvation session like this one.  JMO

  • Those types of diets are a big NO NO!!!  Your body has to have food to be able to work properly!!  Those types of "diets" will only end up providing very temporary weight loss....and end up causing your body more harm in the end! Those types of "diets" are not fasting....they are starving!!  Fasting is part of a close spiritual walk with God....not a diet plan!
