Unwrapped presents at bridal shower?

My mom was talking to me about this b/c a few of her friends went to a shower where everybody brought their present unwrapped and it was put on a display table...it took out the whole people sitting around and watching the bride open gifts part.

What do you think about it...my Mom wanted to do it for mine but I'm very unsure. Has anyone been to one?  How do they work?  The idea sounds neat b/c I know most people don' t enjoy showers to begin with but what would you actually do for the 3 hours your their?  My Mom said if I just want the traditonal shower that's fine but she said to ask around to see if anyones been to one like this so I figured I'd start here.

 TIA

 Kristin

Re: Unwrapped presents at bridal shower?

  • We opened presents at mine.  It was fun.  People ooh'ed and ahh'ed as I opened them and talked to each other through the process.

If you want to open presents then open presents.  If you don't want to open presents then ask people not to wrap them.  It all boils down to what you want and not what your mom wants.

  • I haven't been to a shower like that, but I've heard of them.  I guess if you're having a lot of guests (I'm thinking over 50) then it might be a good idea.  I would think that you still have to take time to acknowledge the gifts in front of everyone.  I don't think they just sit there the whole time.  I guess the rest of the time would be spent eating and talking to all of your guests.
  • This is what I wanted to do for mine, but my mom shot me down because she said that people like to see your reaction when you open it.  I do not like to be put on the spot or be the center of attention.  Sitting in the front of the room in front of 50 people opening a million presents for 2 hours is not my idea of fun.  Thus, I got emotional and embarrassed with some gifts and started bawling, which made me just want to go home.  LOL

If you do the display table thing, you should probably come up with a few other things to do since that usually takes up most of the time at a shower.  You should also make sure that you get around and talk to everyone too.

  • I had a Display Shower! However, I acknowledged every gift - what it was, who it was from. I did have a few gifts that were wrapped - from the moms, grandmoms, and bridesmaids.

I gotta say... I liked the idea of a Display Shower, but I'm a HUGE fan of gift wrap - I usually add fresh or silk flowers to every gift I wrap, use unique paper and bows, etc. So.. I was a little bummed that I didn't get to see beautiful wrapping jobs, but then again, not everyone is as crazy about gift-wrapping as me!

  • I vote for unwrapping gifts.  How else are you going to be able to get that awesome bow and ribbon hat?!!

  • I never heard of it. I think I would feel more weird standing up acknowledging gifts that are just sitting on a table.

As much as I hate being the center of attention and hated opening gifts in front of people, I totally agree with you, SG.
  • That's exactly what I was telling my mom....yes I like the idea of not having everyone stare at me for 2 hrs especially since it's a 70 person shower but I don't know how I feel about the gifts just sitting on a table.  How exactly do you acknolwedge people for their unwrapped gift?  My mom said the ones she knows of involved everyone walking around looking at the gifts and the card from the gift giver was taped to the gift....I guess I would be going from person to person thanking them but how the heck would I remember who gave it to me what!!!

It's a tough call....I did say if they do the display thing they need to have some sort of game or activity.  It's going to be at a restaurant so everyone will be sitting around...and I know nobody enjoys watching people open presents and I really don't like people staring at me for that long.

I really don't mind either way on how they do it and both families like the idea, I was just wondering what others thought about it.

    Thanks girls
