Anyone ever take "a break" from birth control?

I'm currently on it and was gonna take a break from it for a few months b/c it has my hormones going nuts (boobs hurt like crazy!!)....the nurse at my Dr's office said it's fine and suggested I go back on it at the end of August early September b/c I want to be on it for the wedding and honeymoon (don't want to be dealing with bloating and birth control normally stops my period)...then I would go off it for good after the wedding. So it would pretty much be off it for 4 month, on it for 4 months then off it for good.

Have any of you taken a break from it, what can I expect going off and then back on? Do you think I should even do it or suck it up until I go off after the wedding.

Re: Anyone ever take "a break" from birth control?

  • Call your doctor and ask them since everybody's body is different.  They will be able to answer all of your concerns.
  • Maybe you could just switch pills? I was on a low-dose pill and didn't really have any side-effects from hormones. When I did go off the pill for a couple months - my periods were so much worse, and PMS was too. So just keep that in mind - you may be trading one symptom for another.
  • I agree with Toni. I tried to do this before my wedding and I am still dealing with issues after going off the pill 11 months later. I would just talk to your doctor and try to switch to a lower dose pill for now and then after the wedding go off of it completely (if you'd like).
  • I just took a break from the pill.  I have nothing good to report from going off of it.  I have nothing good to report from going back on it.  All around I would say it was a lose lose situation.
  • Thanks girls!!  I have talked to my Dr and she said it's fine to do but give myself time to readjust to going back on before the wedding. Oh and I'm already on a really low does pill.

I guess I'll just suck it up, I wish I could just go off of it for good now but I do't want to have to deal with getting my period around the wedding and honeymoon...sometimes I wish I never went on the pill to begin with

  • I took "a break" from birth control.  I now have a beautiful daughter Wink

As soon as I saw you had posted I knew this was going to be your response. Smile  She is so stinkin' cute though!

  • I took a break as well, and things were well went I wasn't taking it, but going back on the pilll was a mess. ?Horrible nausea and heavy flow. ?I just want to be done with it forever!
  • I've taken breaks before but I wouldn't really recommend it right now with the wedding coming up. Most of the time my cycle will double when I first get off it and then will fall back into being normal. That's most of the time... one time I had a Oct-Jan cycle! Other times it caused my normally clear skin to freak out and I had break outs all over my body.

What I'm trying to say, its really a crap shoot about how your body will react when you go off of it. I wouldn't take the chance with your wedding at the end of the year. You'll be under enough stress as is, why add one more problem to the list? The reliability of being covered by BC is worth it imo.
