Hi ladies! I haven't been around a lot lately because I've been super overwhelmed with school and job hunting, and last week was my spring break so I wasn't in front of the computer a lot. Anyway, I just wanted to share the little nightmare I endured this past Thursday. My 1 1/2 year old MacBook completely crashed. No one was able to give me a good reason of why it happened (I really thought Macs were not supposed to crash), but apparently my hard drive got fried somehow. According to the tech at Computer Village, my hard drive was almost full (which shocked me).
Anyway, I was given a 50% chance of losing all my data...close to 2 years worth of pictures, video clips, music, and Word documents (school and work related). NONE OF IT was backed up. Needless to say, I was an emotional wreck and was barely able to function until I knew what was going to happen. I dropped it off on Thursday afternoon, and on Saturday morning, I got the phone call saying that - THANK GOD - they were able to recover everything.
I just wanted to share because honestly I feel like a huge moron for not having backed up any of that stuff and I can't believe I came so close to losing it. There was really no reason for me not to do it. It was just out of laziness and ignorance (I really thought Macs were immune to crashing). So now I am in the process of saving EVERYTHING. I ordered a 500 GB external hard drive from Amazon, and everything will go there. On top of that, I am uploading ALL my photos onto Flickr - I paid the $24 yearly fee for pro membership which is great. You get to load unlimited photos in their original size (as long as they are not bigger than 20MB, which is huge). Video clips are going to Flikr as well (the smaller ones) or to YouTube. All my documents are going on Google Documents. And I'm even considering burning stuff on CDs as a 3rd backup source. That's probably overkill, but I don't want to risk ever being in the position to lose my data again.
So I just wanted to share - in case you are a moron like me who doesn't back up the stuff on your computer, DO IT NOW. You will be sooooo glad you did. I just keep thinking about what would have happened if I had lost all this stuff...pretty much every memory of my first year and a half of marriage. Or even worse, if I hadn't learned my lesson now, and this would have happened to me 5 years from now and I would have lost thousands of my future child's baby pictures
Look into getting an external hard drive, burn stuff on CDs, or put all your stuff in online storage - or do all three!!!

I am so glad you were able to save everything! I think I am going to have to go to best buy and buy an external hard drive & back things up!
First of all, HELLO... you've been missed!
Glad you were able to restore all the data... that would have really sucked. I've thought about backing up onto CDs, but my CDROM drive doesn't work. =( I think I'll be investing in an external drive! Thanks for the headsup.

Thanks for sharing Jen! This actually happened to me...right before my wedding. I lost photos, docs etc. Thankfully I had some of my wedding documents saved on the computer at work. Since then I save everything on my external hard drive. Apple gave me a one-time excuse and let me re-download the music i lost on itunes for free.
I know your pain. So glad you were able to recover everything.
Jackie this happened to me too. I didnt want to have to buy a new laptop just because my burner doesnt work. I bought an external cd burner. You plug it in through a usb like you would any other external device. I bought one for $50 at best buy.
oh my gosh, how stressful!! I'm so glad you were able to get everything back!
I never used to back anything up, but now that I have Jake I go overkill and make 50 copies of everything and back it up in every source I can find. It's scary what could happen and it's a good reminder to everyone to back up often!
My blog
i'm glad you were able to recover everything on your mac. i know how stressful having your PC die on you. my senior yr in college my PC died!! in the middle of finals...i was just about to turn in a paper online when it died. i was devastated but the prof was really nice about it and let me turn it in late.
unfortunately, i never recovered anything!!
i will say, i back up everything since then. and always keep online files.
