Moving to L.A., please recommend

My husband got transferred to L.A. so we;ll be moving this summer... recommend nice places to live. I have a teeager (16) and a 5 month old. We're considering Redondo Beach, need good school district. Anyone in Palos Verdes? Manhattan Beach? El Segundo? Any nice townhomes in these areas? Looking for a nice complex, fairly new or a house. 3/2

Re: Moving to L.A., please recommend

  • Rancho Palos Verdes here. We really love the peninsula (RPV, PV, Rolling Hills...). No kids yet, but I've heard nothing but great things about the schools up here. They are pretty top notch. We are in a townhome / there are a few in the area. They are a bit older, but many have been remodeled. Houses are quite pricey in this area.

Personally, I like Redondo and Manhattan as well. However, living on the peninsula helps me feel less like I'm in the city.

My brain is a bit fried at the moment, but feel free to ask away if you have anymore questions.

  • I'm in El Segundo and we love it.  DH grew up here and I grew up in Torrance so we've been here our whole life.  ES has a really small town feel and great schools.  There are quite a few townhomes and houses around here for sale or rent....not sure what route you are taking.  Manhattan Beach is really nice but I think it's overpriced.

Living up on the hill (PV) seems like kind of a pain to me.  You are pretty far from accessing the freeway.

  • Where is your husband's job/office? It's important to factor in the commute w/the job.

I am partial to El Segundo too.

But MB is nice.  PV is wonderful but getting into and out of PV can be a pain.  Not for you but for your husband...unless he is working in the South Bay.

  • I grew up in Manhattan Beach and I'm living in Hawthorne, now (can't afford to move into the South Bay proper!)

There are great schools in Manhattan, Redondo, El Segundo and up on the Palos Verdes peninsula. Manhattan Beach is definately the most expensive of all the cities to live --"starter" homes are priced well over a million, although a few teeny fixers can be had for less. Redondo is probably the most affordable, especially for single-family and townhomes. El Seg is somewhere in the middle, while PV is pricey (and a little inconvenient, b/c you have to drive all the way up and down that dang hill to get anywhere, and it takes 20 mins plus to get to the freeway)

feel free to page is you have any more questions, or re: specific neighborhoods, schools, etc.

  • Hi! Welcome! I would definitely go off of where your DH is going to be working. My DH used to commute 26 miles one way & it could sometimes take 2 hours to get home!
