Re: To all the nesties...

  • Really does that count for the home bought last year too? Was this in the stimulus plan or is it the same as the $7500 I was talking about back in Feb?
  • From what I understand, it's in the stimulus package, but only applies if you buy your house in 2009. It's different from that 7500 thing because you don't have to pay this one back at all where the 7500 you do.
  • I thought that stimulus package made it so that we didn't have to pay back that $7500 either? Now we do? Hmm
  • DH found something out from our tax guy. We could file an amendment and get the $8000 right away, but we'd have to change our withholdings from now (well, when we file the amendement) to the end of the year. To avoid this, we can just wait and claim it on our 2009 tax return.

I really don't know the whole story, though, so don't take my word for it. We'll just put the money in savings, so it doesn't bother me too much not to get it right away.

What I understand about last year's $7500 versus this year's $8000 is that they're two different things. I haven't heard if they officially changed last year's so you don't have to pay it back.

  • Oh, I'm also pretty sure they changed it so the $8000 applies to any house bought in 2009. The $7500 from last year had a deadline (June 30th? July 30th?).
  • Sorry Redwing Sad  You will have to pay the 7500.00 back. Here is the link if you would like to read up on it.  http://www.federalhousingtaxcredit.com/

We are putting ours in our savings account as well.  But we want to get it this year because who knows what the rules will be next year.
