Re: Finally - a good idea!
I do think it's makes sense not to give assistance to those that are using their money to buy drugs instead of to better their life. I would hope, however, that if they do test positive, they don't throw them completely out of the system and instead offer guidance or at least names of other organizations that can help them out. My main concern would be for any children in this situation. #1 it sucks that they have to live with parents abusing drugs but #2, if they were getting assistance, it was at least a tiny bit guaranteed that they were getting food. Now what happens to them if the parent(s) can't get assistance anymore? Are those children now going to go in foster care? Are the drug tests confidential?
To me, it sounds like a good idea but at the same time, I feel like it going to create a lot more red tape in the system.
I haven't read the whole article, so forgive anything I might've missed.
If there are children involved, they need to be removed. I dislike the idea of throwing MORE children "into the system" but at the same time, if their parents are abusing drugs and getting government assistance, it's not really a great place for a child to be raised.
I have a REAL ISSUE with people who take assistance from the government, but then abuse it. ie: Octo-mom. If you're taking assitance from the government - and I have no problem with that because everyone needs a helping hand sometimes in one form or another - you should NOT abuse it or stay on assistance forever. That's not assistance, that's dependence.
Ditto what Paula said: If someone is using drugs, their children should be removed from that situation. There are plenty of families that would be willing to take a child in PLUS you have to think - some people who are drug users have brothers or sisters who are not and who would take the child while their sibling gets help.
I also think there should be a set time limit. You can HAVE assistance for up to (for example) 9 months. If after 9 months you don't have a job, you have to show us why and if it's a good reason (such as you've applied at X amount of places and no one is hiring), you can have up to 9 more months. If you haven't found anything after that, you're out because, let's face it, McDonald's is ALWAYS hiring.
