POLL: Garages

This was totally inspired by our neighbors across the street who have a garage full of crap (i.e.stacks and stacks of boxes) and park their 4 cars in the driveway and on the street.  LOL.

1. Do you have a garage?
2. Do you actually use it for your car?
3. If you don't why not?

Re: POLL: Garages

  • 1. yes we have a 2 car detached garage

    2. we park both our vehicles in it most days

    3. n/a, my in-laws are like your neighbors, they have so much stuff in there garage you can't walk through it. Its pointless to have a garage IMO to just use it for unneccessary storage.

  • 1. yes, 2 car garage was at the top of our "must have" list for house buying

    2. yes, and we've made an agreement that we will not ever fill our garage up so much that we can't park our cars in it

    3. n/a

My in-laws have a 4-car garage, and only manage to get one car in it most of the time.  It astounds me.

I heard before that the garage is the part of a house that is least often used for it's designed purpose (parking cars).  I forget what percentage of people don't use their garages for cars was given, but it was high enough to surprise me.

  • 1. Do you have a garage?  Yes we are so lucky to have a 3 car garage!
    2. Do you actually use it for your car? Yep!  We still have room for one more and DH keeps it VERY clean and organized.
    3. If you don't why not? n/a

  • 1. Do you have a garage?  yes we have a 3 car garage .... detached from the house
    2. Do you actually use it for your car? yes... DH is very adamant about that...it is nice though, I never had a garage until I moved here.  I think that is why DH built such a big garage... so there would be room for other things as well... mower, tools, etc
    3. If you don't why not?
  • 1. yes- detached

    2. No- not yet :)

    3. We are remodeling our house. DH stores supplies (flooring, insulation, boards) in there now.  There are also a few things we don't want to move into the house because we don't have anywhere to go with them...yet! It drives me crazy in the winter knowing I have a place to park my car, but can't!

  • 1. Do you have a garage? Yes, a car garage
    2. Do you actually use it for your car? haha no we don't
    3. If you don't why not? couple of reasons 1)we used to for awhile but the angle at which you have to pull in is kind of weird and if you don't do it right you'll scrap the car trying to get in and since we bought a new car I don't want to chance it. 2) when our IL's moved, they cleaned out DH's old room and we told them to just throw it all away but they didn't so they magically showed up at our house one day with all this_shit of his and it landed in the garage.
  • 1. Do you have a garage? Sort of. It's kind of hard to explain, but we have an area with three walls under our porch that's just big enough for one car. Our house was around before cars were, so I don't know if it was added on at some point, or if there was originally some other intended purpose (can't imagine what!).

    2. Do you actually use it for your car? DH does; I hate parking in there. You have to back uphill at an angle to get in.  Still, it's nice to have some offstreet parking in the city :)

    3. If you don't why not? There's not really anything else we could use it for. There's no door, so we couldn't use it for storage unless we wanted our stuff to get stolen.

  • 1. Do you have a garage?  Yes

    2. Do you actually use it for your car?   Yes, it's only a one car garage but we always have a car parked in it.

    3. If you don't why not?  N/A

I would love to have a 3 car garage one day.  Plenty of room for 2 cars and then extra storage for lawn items, etc.

  • 1. yes a 1 car detatched
    2. no
    3. the entrance to it is in our alley and it would be too hard for my car to get in it, and DH doesn't park in it because we are using it for storage for our outdoor stuff... like lawn mower, kayaks, bikes, etc.

  • 1.  Yes

    2.  No

    3.  Dh stores his bikes in there instead, and all of our lawn equipment resides in there.

  • 1. Yes we have a 1 car garage

    2. Yes, we use it for my car but it is a tight squeeze.  I'd like to try and rearrange some things out there but it is dh's "domain".......

My neighbors garage is just like your neighbors...2 car garage packed to the brim with stuff.  He actually just has a path through there to walk, haha.

  • 1.  yes, 2 car integrated.

    2.  We use it for my car.  DH parks his truck in the driveway.

    3.  DH has his motorcycle, 2 riding lawn mowers, push mower, dirt bike and other assorted items  (junk?) in his bay.  if he had his way, we'd have a 10 car garage!

  • 1. Yes, an attached one-car garage

    2. Yes, my car gets parked in the garage

    3.  When we first moved into our house the garage was the staging/storage area until we got all the work done on the house.  After that, I've tried to keep it clean and open for a car, except for when DH is working on projects and turns the garage into his shop.  All the outdoor equipment (mower, yard cart, yard tools, etc.) go in the shed.

  • 1. Do you have a garage? I have a carport; next best thing to a garage, imo
    2. Do you actually use it for your car? Yes.  I have a shed for mower and other junk.
    3. If you don't why not? n/a

pookie - I think I know what you mean, and I call that a carport.

  • 1. Do you have a garage? We do, its a one car.
    2. Do you actually use it for your car? We do keep a car in it, its a tight fight because its a smaller sized garage (but I think we are pretty lucky to have it in a rental) and we have a large chest freezer as well as a ton of other stuff in it. But we will always make sure there is room for one of our cars in it.
    3. If you don't why not?

  • 1. Do you have a garage? Yep.

    2. Do you actually use it for your car? Yep.

    3. If you don't, why not? Lots of people in TX don't have basements or attics (weird, right?) It's not really possible to have basements here because the ground is solid rock. Many people thus use their garages for storage because it's all they really have besides a few closets! As we accumulate more things, we might also have more & more kept in our garage. It's annoying! And I HATE that all of our neighbors park their cars in the street.

I call it a carport too but I'm never sure if that's technically correct :)  I think most people think of a carport as a separate structure, but ours is actually part of our house. We can go right into the basement from there.

  • 1. Do you have a garage? Yes...it was originally a 1-car car port, and was converted into a garage, so it's tiny
    2. Do you actually use it for your car? No. simply because we have 2 vehicles, a one-vehicle-width driveway, and we're constantly 'shuffling' the order to accomodate who leaves first in the morning. The garage would just add another layer of hassle.
    3. If you don't why not? See above. Also because we don't have a shed or anything right now and we keep our lawn mower, snow blower, etc in the garage. Since it's only a 1-car-port-converted, it's VERY tiny. You couldn't put those items in there and still park a car.
  • 1. Yes we have a 1 car...its not huge but decent sized and a garage was a must have for me

    2. Yes...mine!!  DH parks in our extra space (we have a 2 vehicle width driveway)

    3. N/A

I should add that our development has an HOA and the fees cover grounds maintenance so realistically no one in our development needs a mower, snowblower, etc.  It's just amazing to me that people consider junk more valuable than something that gets you to and from work, etc.

  • 1. We have a two car garage

    2. Yes,we actually park both cars in there. It is considered oversized so we can fit the cars and still have room for storing things.

    3. N/A?

  • 1. Do you have a garage? Yes. 2 car.

    2. Do you actually use it for your car? Nope. We use it for cords of wood for our stove, and as a work space with a workbench and an obscene amount of power tools.

    3. If you don't why not? We don't mind parking our cars outside. Growing up we never used our garage because it was my dad's workspace.

And our house now was before cars to so it was made for carriages and to be opened from the inside. There is no way to put any kind of opener on them and they're huge and swing out.

One cool thing is that there is a huge radiator on the ceiling that was used to heat the carriages in the winter.

  • We have an oversized one car garage. We have some stuff stored there but it is all kept very neat on shelves/hooks. I park my car there and DH is constantly jealous :)
  • 1.  Yes, a 2 car attached garage.

    2.  Yes, we park both of our cars in it.  I know some of our neighbors can only fit one or zero cars because they have so much stuff!  We have a shed, but we also fit our push lawnmower, snowblower, toolchest, and other things in it around the sides.  We have smaller cars though (corolla and mazda 3), so I'm not sure what would happen if we get a larger/wider car.... I guess we'd fill up more of the shed!

    3.  n/a - I'm so happy that we don't have to scrape off the frost and snow in our winters!  a 2-car garage was always a requirement when we were looking at houses!

  • 1. No! And no basement either. Thank heaven for closets and a shed!

Someday we will hopefully have at least a 1-car garage. Sooner if we win the lottery :)
